First Calvin and Hobbes book ever published. There's nothing you can say about C&H that hasn't already been said. Bill Watterson is a genius, and this entire series STILL makes me laugh out loud, even twenty years later. When I say I've read each of these books twenty times, it's no exaggeration - in fact, it's probably a gross understatement. These books went with me everywhere - even to college. Every time I'd get sick, my mom would hook me up with some soup and my stack of Calvin & Hobbes. Thanks, Mom. &=)

At this point, probably the definitive biography of Eliot. Gordon transitions often and well between the biographical and the critical, a la Richard Ellmann, though there is little original in the literary analysis. Much more central to this account of Eliot's life than Ackroyd's is the figure of Emily Hale.

Louis Praamsma (1910-1984), a church historian, moved from The Netherlands to Canada in 1910. His doctorate from the Free University was on 'Abraham Kuyper as Church Historian'. This book is a popular level biography of Kuyper. This book is perhaps a little less accessible than Vanden Berg's biography, but it provides an excellent complement to Vanden Berg. Both volumes deal well with the education and political issues Kuyper struggled with, but Praamsma provides more detail on the chruch reforms Kuyper was involved with. He also concentrates more on the religious and cultural background - the first three chapters provide an excellent summary, particularly for those unfamiliar with Dutch history and culture. Praamsma is much more refereneced (10 pages of endnotes) than Vanden Berg. Both are 'friends of Kuyper' and so are largely uncritical. Though Praamsma does highlight some of the issues others had with Kuyper, he also quotes more from Kuyper. If you have time read both - if time is at a premium go for Praamsma.

LOVE this author and all his work.
The first 24 pages really pulled me in. My only other experience with Boyle was "Riven Rock" and I found it fun to read but on the whole a little disappointing. Still, I have to stick with the workshop gang. Marilynne Robinson certainly hasn't let me down the past few months. Having read the book... It seems like Boyle was fascinated with the idea of Kinsey's inner circle of researchers, but the idea didn't quite translate into a great novel. The character of Milk was likeable enough, if not a little bland, but it was unclear what point exactly Boyle was trying to make except to explore the titillation of sex research.
Well, what a drag. I really had to slog my way through this one. All of the quirks, attitude, over-the-top-ness that made the first book(Dragon Bound)such a hoot were no longer new in this book and verged on flat-out annoying. Tiago, the Thunderbird Wyr, was so overbearing in the first half of the book that he bordered on true alpha ass-ness. And Niniane (formerly known as "Tricks') was often the Ninny. Though, in all fairness, she was often adult, too. But the wavering between the two halves of her persona was unsettling. The story line was interesting and that's what kept me reading. And there were some minor characters, especially the leads for the next book, who were page-worthy. I'll call this one sophomore slump and hope the next one is better.
Best Book Ever!!!! I love this book

From the beginning, I found that the book was hard to keep reading and that I couldn't stay focused, but I once more events happened it became easier to read and to keep reading to the end. The idea of a society being completely controlled by "The Party" is a very frightening thought and gives an idea of what the world may come to one day in the future, but at the same time looking at when the book was written to when they thought it would happen to the world, is reasurring that it will not happen anytime soon since it has long passed by. As I was reading, I kept waiting for something to happen with some more action, anything more than all the whispering and sneeking around that happened throughout the whole novel, but that never happened and I think that is what the book needed, just a little action, maybe a rebellion of some kind. Overall, 1984 was well written and took a very interesting view of what the world would be like if "The Party" took over and people had no power at all and all freedom was completely lost. Even with how scary that is, it makes one think of what if it did or will happen and if there is any hope of trying to find a loop-hole to escape something like that happening to our society.

3.5 stars Enjoyable but lacks originality. A lot of this book seems too familiar. I'd like to see a break from the typical pattern of YA dystopian fiction. Great writing, though.
