Engineer Martin Anyangwe´ book OSHIE – People, Places, Events is a wonderful gem that in its tight 200 pages encapsulates a complete wide spectrum sweep of the village of Oshie, Cameroon; its geography and history; its people with key biographies with photos and genealogies of its prominent members; its culture, cosmography; its music and life; its ceremonies including the Signature Dance of Oshie, the OKANI – Electric Dance. The book assembles the multitudinous threads from oral tradition, folklore and music in addition to existing records to weave a living document of the accomplishments of its brave citizens through time to the present. The author chronicles the origins of Oshie from its ancestral land Oshum/Mbeitong and their migration and settlement to its current location in Momo division in Northwest Region, Cameroon, through the accomplishments of a rich sequence of enlightened rulers. Oshie is now a prosperous village of 10,000 people headed by the popular traditional and political ruler HRH Fon Anyangwe V – the living embodiment of Oshie Culture; who is assisted in discharging the administrative functions by the AKUM – King Makers´ Council of traditional elders; the NGYEHs as advisors to the Fon; the OKUMENDZI as the holistic protectors of the clan; the ONGANG as traditional healers; and the Quarter Heads as elected representatives of the people. Reaching out from the village to the world-at-large a successful Diaspora with a strong sense of identity and commitment to the village keeps the connections alive and thriving. A great metaphor used by an Oshie poet Jude Agyingi Achaki summarizes its people as Palm Trees - always giving and nourishing – the fruits of this investment being evident in the pride of the people towards its village and vice versa. One of Oshie´s sons, Prince Emmanuel Ngassa Anyangwe, M.D., has permanently placed Oshie in cyberspace with his fantastic videos of the community and its traditions posted on Youtube. Reading the book one is enveloped by the warmth of the culture as well as its inclusive and supportive model of life and living that is a living testimony of a social benchmark of Humanity that one can live by. Highly Recommended Reading! Yaoundé 11-4/6 19FebXI
