Picked this up on a whim last week because the cover is pretty and the book has a superhero theme. It's about a paralyzed 16-year-old and the kids he works with at a bakery, most of them living inside their own minds in a sort of fantasy world of superheroes and superfeats. The book has an air of sadness consistently, as we gradually learn how Joseph came to be paralyzed and the hard life he's led, but the writing is superb and the ending is uplifting.

It's young adult without being stupid. There is no popular trying to get the guy, fit in while trying to become homecoming queen. It's about a girl who feels numb in her life, but can't "speak" as to why - until the end. Because of this her friends and family have left or do not understand her. Highly recommend.

I didn't expect to connect to her voice so well. Poets laureate write good! I picked it up because I felt like I should have read it in high school...I'm not sure I could have handled it then.
Powerful depression era coming of age in harlem. Amazing.

This was a great book. Lori sent me the paperback and it had been sitting on my bedside table. Truthfully I was a little turned off by the title, but I ask you not to be! Really it has very little to do with concubines at all. This story takes place in an International Settlement in China where many Russians have fled the revolution in their country. The story is told by many different people, the 15 year -Lydia old daughter who is the real protagonist, her mother, her school teacher who ends up running opium to keep his school open, and Chang An Lo, the mysterious chinese boy who saves Lydia's life from a gang of drug runners. This is an intense book, with some seriously bad things going on, but manages to be redemptive, and beautiful too. Highly recommended. A sequel comes out this June!

Original Review on http://reutreads.wordpress.com/2011/0... Okay, I know. Shoot me now. Yes, I admit it. I am only now reading Vampire Academy. The truth is, I first came across VA at a bookstore about a year and a half ago, when I was just beginning to get sick of vampire books. I immediately dismissed it as a typical love triangle, vampire story. Vampire Academy is not that story. Rose is such a badass it's hard to imagine her being nice to anyone, but Richelle Mead pulls off characterization so well, that we feel sorry for her as well as like her. This book has everything; romance, best friends, hot boys, mythology, evil villains, secrets, and some definitely clever dialogue. What I really liked about this book, among other things (that will also be mentioned) was how real it was. There was just this... groundedness that you don't see in much YA. Rose knew herself well enough to see when she was doing something wrong, and she is definitely one of my favourite female protagonists ever. Like I said, it was real. It was also dark. A character in particular struck me as totally depressing. Those of you who are privileged to have read this know who I'm talking about. There was sex, wild parties, and an affair. All things that regularly go on in high school. Richelle Mead does not skim over any of this. And I really liked that. Another thing I liked was the way the plot flowed. It was so, so, so well thought out. The author obviously had a plan for everything. The "mythology", for lack of a better word, was also thought out well. The bombshells that are dropped every so often completely fit with everything else. If you're looking for a smart, funny, and white-hot vampire read, please read this.

Great images, but the across the fold design layout took this book from 4 stars to 3. A prime example for book designers of how not to do it.
I read this book because my boss wrote it (David Corn). I think it started to lag in the second half-- just got too nitty-gritty, I guess-- but it's worth reading if you want to understand as best as anyone can how we ended up at war in Iraq. It's pretty crazy; you really can't make this stuff up. A good example of muckraking. A lot of the questions that democratic congressmen have just started to ask are already answered-- in this book. Needless to say, given I am such a slow reader, this book took me forever to read.

This book is for any former Philosophy majors who love themselves nothing more than a good debate. Another key to a good book for me: It leads you to 10 others. This book has done it.
