*** Original Review, book read 2002, review written April 26, 2007 *** Popularly considered the weakest of the Harry Potter series, this book is still strong in its own right, proving that Rowling was no flash in the pan. She successfully builds on the established Potter'verse without ever resting on her laurels. Here secondary characters take more prominence, and readers begin to understand that no character will be given a superficial, one-dimensional treatment as long as Rowling holds the pen. The editing is problematic, and Rowling struggles at times to successfully introduce new readers to the series without boring long-time fans. Later on, when the books' rabid popularity did away with the need to introduce concepts like Quidditch and muggles, Rowling's pacing improved dramatically. Though a flawed book and certainly not her best effort, Chamber of Secrets is a worthy sophmore to a brilliant beginning. *** Audiobook Review, book listened to June 22, 2015, review written November 22, 2015 *** jim dale, voice actor extraordinaire, deserves ALLS OF THE PRIZES that jo rowling hasn't already gotten. he is AMAZING. his inflections are often unexpected but NEVER out of place, which elevates even further j. k. rowling's already brilliant material. he is a master class in, like, LIFE, people. #IncoherentFriggingJoy every now and again i need to revisit this series. this year it was because i was trying to get my daily steps up, for fitness's sake, and i realized that if i listened to audiobooks -- and books i love -- i was waaaay less likely to find excuses to not move ("but BOOKS!" "but LITERACY!" "but OTHER THINGS!"). let me tell you, these books are a thrillsome read, and NOTHING was lost for me in the listening. not one thing. my friends, if ever you have repetitive, possibly boring work ahead of you that does not engage your mind, DO IT WHILE LISTENING TO THE HARRY POTTER AUDIOBOOKS, and you will begin to look mightily forward to said work. DO IT. JUST DO IT. #LaBeoufSchoolOfMotivation

Naked in Death, by J. D. Robb, b-plus, Narrated by Susan Ericksen, produced by Brilliance Audio, downloaded from audible.com. This is the first in the series about the police lieutenant Eve Dallas by J. D. Robb, aka Nora Roberts. These books are set slightly in the future, maybe a century later than now. Eve Dallas is on the edge of traumatic overload because she has shot a man. She doesn’t feel guilty about killing him. It was in the line of duty, and he had already killed a child and was getting ready to kill her. But she felt guilty because she didn’t get there soon enough to save the child. Instead of giving her the mandate to go through psychological testing as a result of the “termination” of the man, her boss orders her immediately to the scene of a crime. She finds a famous woman, the granddaughter of a U.S. senator, dead. She was “a licensed companion” (in this time period prostitution is legal when licensed). The scene is bloody enough, but when she gets back to her own apartment, she finds the killer has dropped off a digital video of the murder scene with the caption: “one of six.” Two more women, both prostitutes, are murdered in exactly the same way. Eve throws herself single-mindedly into the investigation to find the killer. The only part that I don’t like as well is the harlequin romance part of this novel, which puts Nora Roberts in charge-the romantic passion that develops between Eve and Roarke, an Irish millionaire. Ericksen does a masterful job of showing the different accents and is a good choice as narrator of this book.
