I thought this book was very offensive in some ways. I found the way that they had sex kind of disturbing just as i found the way that Rachel had done with her servant in the Bible. It was a decent book, however It was a bit slow for me, seeing as the only books i enjoy reading are Harry Potter.
Although I didn't really love the artist's drawing style (or the black and white) the story was engaging and the plot smart. The Jewish customs and random yiddish words added a nice flavor. I wouldn't be opposed to reading more of this series.

Pros: - Well thought out - Fascinating look into nerdlicious things I've always wanted to know about (e.g. plant domestication and animal husbandry-- no joke) - Great introduction and unifying theme of book that establishes a basis for equality of human kind - Emphasis on non-western history Cons: - Like sitting in a series of lectures of a freshman core-- e.g., at the end of each chapter (lecture), he reiterates EVERY single argument that has been reiterated EVERY single chapter (18 times). It's like being bludgeoned over his head with it... - Length (probably could have been made shorter if he didn't feel the need to make the line of the argument so painfully obvious/repetitive). Unexpected Pro: - After said bludgeoning, I will probably remember more of this book than most others
Peter Clines does what I thought to be a near-impossible feat here- he breathes new life into the well-past-it's-expiration-date zombie story by combining it with an almost equally tired trope, the superhero team. Clines makes the smart decision to throw us into the middle of the story. The zombies have risen, and the superheros already have their origins. This is my least favorite part of both of these kinds of stories- the need to explain just how the superheroes/zombies came to be. Clines smartly chooses to skip this, and only gives us details about each of the different heroes after he has already piqued our interest. He's also managed to introduced an entire super-team's worth of super-guys and super-gals in one short novel, along with telling an interesting story that never gets weighed down in exposition or arbitary plotting. I just now realized there's a sequel, and I'm excited to check it out, even though 'Ex-Heroes' stands on its own. It manages to leave you wanting more not by introducing frustrating cliffhangers or series-long 'mysteries', but by telling a compelling story in a fresh way.

Repost of my Amazon review (http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R3IQUP... I got this book as a Kindle edition through Goodreads. I've not read the previous book but this story manages to retell any missing bits - no idea how much this might annoy those who did know the #1 in the series. One point before I get to the review, if you've not read the book description above (** ie, on the Amazon.co.uk site), then don't, it contains serious spoilers. Without giving anything away, the story concerns Alice, a museum curator, her daughter Margaret, who shares and surpasses her mother's 'seer' abilities, and Nik, Alice's partner, the resident skeptic. Their story happens in 'present' time. It is interwoven with the 'past' story of Ned, another 'seer', who escapes his evil mother's clutches as a child and grows up trying to make sense of his gift/curse. The supernatural aspects of the story are taken from the Australian Aboriginal Dreaming mythology. First the supernatural. I am Australian and did find it a little off-putting to see an American using the Aboriginal mythology in her story but was prepared to be accepting. But the mythology did not ring true. I'm no expert but, although the author uses aspects of the Dreamtime, it seems to include bits of different group stories (based on my Wikipedia and internet browsings) and ascribes to the creatures only one dimensional features of the old ones' natures. Basically, it seemed more a mixing of simplistic dreamtime stories with movie horror tales than of features of aboriginal law. The story is well told and hooked me in after only the first couple of chapters. The characters are engaging and you care about them. The problem is that this reads too much like an in-between book. It explains bits of the previous book and the overall history and sets things up for the next but too little happens to the characters in the present day story and the one from the past, while playing out in an exciting way, is not enough to hold the book together. There is also a major disconnect between the story of Alice's mother in the past and her character as Alice knows it. And the way the book ends, I doubt this will get resolved. It was this final disconnect which dropped my rating from 4 to 3 stars.

A great story that I'm sure many teens could relate to. As a parent of a 17 year old daughter I at times found it tough to read. I kept thinking about my daughter's eating habits and was so thankful not to be in this situation. However, remembering what high school was like I can so see how this could happen to girls.

this book was interesting but did not live up to the hype of the reviews on the back of it
