I loved this collection of short stories. Particularly the first entitled "Children of the Sea." The collection was so sorrowful but powerful and moving. I also really enjoyed the writing and plan to read this authors first novel soon. My enjoyment of this book was probably heightened by my reading it while in Haiti, as it grants the reader some insight into Haiti's history and the mindset of its women.

Kind of hated. bad characterisation, never got to really know the family, and you especially never liked them. movie was even worse, just a warning.

My favorite short stories collection from any author. Lots of lighter screwball comedies, with a few darker dramas thrown in for balance.

An interesting book. A little more theory work would have been appreciated, and less of a regional tone to the fiction analysis, but quite worthwhile.

www.breesabookworm.com I received this book as an ARC from Barbour Publishing. It's being released May 1, 2011. Haha. I don't know what it was about this book, but it was kinda cheesy! LOL I think the point of it is to be kinda silly, so I guess that's okay. It was quirky for sure. You've got Shannon who has gone out in search for a city of gold to show the world that her father wasn't crazy, although I think she might be. You've got Gabe who is on his way to his brother's house, who I think might just be the dorkiest male lead ever. You've got Lurene who is just freakin' crazy psycho. You've got Tyra who is out to snag her a husband, which would be Gabe. You've got Buck who is out to snag Shannon, his intended. We get the pleasure of following ALL of them along as their stories intersect and they all come together one way or another. The book overall was decent. Like I mentioned, it was quirky...but I also found it kind of annoying. There's a big to do over propriety in the book. I get it's like historical, so it goes along with the times. A female isn't supposed to be alone with a male, blah blah blah. But I could hardly get through the bits in the book about this. The parson and others got on my last nerve. That was the only truly annoying part for me. None of the characters were all exceptionally likeable in my opinion. I don't know, this one just didn't hit the spot. BUT, I imagine that loads of people would like it. It's got some action, slight cheese ball romance, and interesting humor. I say, go for it! :)
