This book is about two kids living in a labor camp during the cultural revolution in China. The cultural revolution was a time when Mao (leader of China) was trying supress revolutionary ideas. He thought that any activists and idealists posed threats to the country as a communist country. He sent his enemies and people he felt threatened by to these labor camps. Throughout the book, the hardships of these labor camps were expressed. The boys went through physical labor and had very little food. The working conditions they faced were nearly impossibile. They had to put dificated goods on their backs and carry it long distances. The protagonist, Narrarator, was not given a name. I think the author did this to show that in these labor camps, individuality was not a possesion. Narrarator and his friend Luo went through many many journeys. They encountered a women who they both fell in love with. She was also not given a name. This became a conflict between the two friends. Throughout the book, they read books, they were not allowed to read. This demonstrated their thirst for knowledge and the hidden truth. The author reveals various themes throughout the book, by refering to other texts.

When I started the book I really was excited and then it got a little boring. I was almost done and it was really hard to read but, when I finished it it was really good so maybe it was just a little sore spot. I would recommend this book to people that like romance and spy.

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read! Rob Bell, one of the BEST speakers ever, is a pastor at a church in Michigan. His speaking/writing make me want to move to Michigan to be able to hear him speak every Sunday. In this book, he speaks of the early church, explaining that we need to revert back to old ways and traditions. He references the Bible (which I think pastors do not do enough of these days), and knows Hebrew. You'll love this book! It's an easy read, but it also makes you think.

Very easy to read and informative. I like how she brings together the scientific community in radioactivity and traces it through the generations. I was not keen on the bits she summarized Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary to show the status of women. While I get the point, it just seemed a rather florid and and obtuse way of demonstrating it. Since the book is a non-fiction, there seems to be better ways to articulate it. But that was a tiny section. The very last quote of Marie Curie was lovely: A scientist in his laboratory is not only a technician, he is also a child placed before natural phenomenon, which impress him like a fairy tale. So true.

Oh. My. God. Just read it. Don't watch the movie. I don't care that it took me almost six weeks, it was completely worth it. Again, it's utterly readable and wonderfully dark & sexy, and the slower bits (of which there are few) are still necessary and quite helpful in the development of this vengeance scheme. Fantastic.

The poems have a deceptive open-endedness; they stand on their own, open to multiple interpretations, and yet also clearly reflect their initial inspiration. Bob’s language is simple and emotional, yet precise. The poems contain ample humor and playfulness, and also an ongoing sense of discovery. And the paintings, too, despite their primacy in the process, and their initial inspiration, surely are changed by the words yoked to them. An image that seems to suggest struggle can be transformed into an image of pulling together by Bob’s words, attached to and altering each image. This book is a perfect example of how collaboration--a meeting of equals, each plying their particular skills, yet gaining strength from the presence of another--should work. The poems and pictures open and open and open with repeated viewings and readings, leaving the reader in a state of wonder.
