I thought I knew what I was getting into when I started this book. And I did after the first few chapters. Then I was taken somewhere totally different, and although incredibly odd, I was believing everything I was reading. I think about half way through, this book really hits its stride. If you can just accept it, you will enjoy it!

book 3 of the young adult sci-fi 'chaos walking' trilogy has a fantastic transparent overlayed jacket/cover design (similar to the first two books i guess, but this is the best of them i think). and once again the typography throughout the book is intelligently handled and plays an even larger role in comprehending the story than it did previously. it's a very powerful and intense book dealing with the ambiguities, complexities & horrors of war—all in the context of well-developed characters. my disappointment with it (the same as i had with book 2) is that i think it loses itself somewhat in its depth and intensity and again doesn't build on the wonder and discovery shown in the first book. nevertheless i think patrick ness deserves all the awards he's received for this series. it's an important work that skilfully addresses some very timely themes for the world we live in.

i loved this book even more when i watched the promotional dvd bechdel's publisher put out with it and saw that she poses herself in photographs of every character in every frame before she draws them. i have an affinity for the obsessive compulsive.
