An expertly crafted, thrilling tale of a girl forced into child combat in her post-apocalyptic society. A few things really struck me about this book. First, Collins does a good job of drawing us into the same voyeuristic mode that the book's fictional spectators enter when watching the deadly games, and once there, she toys with several "deus ex-machinas" to show we have no choice but to cheer for someone in even the most abhorrent games. There's a dark side to that, but it also shows that we are always drawn to find the best people, the ones worthy of triumph or just survival. None of the children should have been there; but once they are, we have to find the best solution. Second, I was impressed with the efficient and ruthless construction of the book's universe. Collins is obviously a student of the best fantasy worlds, and she knows how to set up one up with great economy. She does this by using images we already have of post-apocalyptic worlds and tweaking them slightly but significantly. However, the book does not contain the same amount of sheer wonder as Harry Potter, nor does it pursue any moral lessons as strongly as Watership Down. Several other books have set up the same basic premise to this one, and although Collins does everything exceedingly well, she doesn't really do anything new. Read this addictive and entertaining book for the thrill, though, because such a well-crafted story is hard to find in any genre.

Wow. I didn't know what to expect from Syrie James's Nocturnal. I became deeply entranced with the cover when it was released in hardcover but felt reluctant to buy it. Then when I saw it in paperback I was ready to take the plunge because I was still fascinated by the cover and the description. And it totally blew me away! My first thought upon reading the cover description was that it reminded me of the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. And in more ways than 1, that notion is true. While I couldn't find anything in the author's comments about it being an inspiration of sorts, I firmly believe it's true. First, we have a mysterious man who lives in a house in the woods overlooking a hill or whatever. He's very secluded and keeps to himself. There's also the fact that he takes Nicole in under his care for awhile. She cannot leave his house, she's not a prisoner but a guest, until the roads clear and she can get back to town and to the airport. And he forbids her to enter the west wing! Okay, it was his study. ;) Nicole at first feels scared yet grateful towards the stranger for rescuing her. Her reactions are reasonable, she wakes up in a strange man's house. Who wouldn't freak at first. She is perturbed when she learns she cannot leave for at least 4 days til the storm dies down and the roads clear out. She learns that her rescuer is not exactly a people-person either. He has his secrets that he keeps guarded. There are moments when he is terrifying and has outbursts--much like a certain beast! But after a day or so, the two get to know one another and talk to each other. They discuss many things, some ordinary and some personal issues. But Nicole still can't help but wonder what other secrets Michael is hiding. It does become obvious to the reader what his secret is. In fact we learn before Nicole since the story is in third person p.o.v. and goes back and forth between Nicole and Michael. The romance between the two that develops is truly romantic. There's nothing else to say about it. It's not hot carnal sex that we tend to see in other UF and PNR books, this is like pure love. Nicole even admits that it's weird to feel this way after such a short time, but it's there. They each help one another with their inner struggles in ways that they couldn't imagine. They have both sub-comb to the lives they lived, never expecting a change. The ending was heart touching. Can't say more than hat. Some issues that I did have was that not much happened plotwise other than the romance. I get that they were stuck in a cabin, but there was hardly ever any action. Not much danger--from an outside source. There was no real enemy. It was more of a self discovery between the characters and their getting over their own problems. I would have liked a little more of a conflict or something that presented a threat to the couple. But overall it was a nice read. A good modern day fairy tale. Truly lovely! Overall rating 4/5 stars

This is the final book in the Princes trilogy by Hoyt. I loved both The Raven Prince and The Leopard Prince and was expecting the same with this one. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy it half as much. This is as much a love story as a story of revenge. The hero, Simon, has inherrited the title of Viscount after the death of his brother in a duel. A duel he was forced to make by four men who stood to gain money after his death. So Simon found out who those men were and challenged them in duels in order to avenge his brother's murder. The story starts after Simon has already killed the first two men and has two more left. One of the men arranges for Simon to be hit and left in an empty countryside road to freeze to death. Fortunately for Simon, a yound woman returning home finds him and has him carried to her house to recuperate. They find themselves attracted to each other but Simon believes he has to fullfil his mission befores he gets involved with her. He leaves for London but soon returns for her since she won't leave his mind. But while he brings her back to London with him, he stills goes out, seeking his remaining victims every night. Lucy learns at some point about the men he killed and those he still seeks out and has to make a decision; should she stay with him or is he beyond salvation? I'm usually very supportive of a hero's revenge cause, but in this one it was just too much. Simon is obsessed with his cause and it frankly takes up most of the story, leaving little space for the romance to develop. Lucy, who was extremely attracted to Simon from start, has an unrealistically huge trouble realising that she loves him: it doesn't happen until 70-80 pages before the end! And as for the last duel, well I think Simon just took it too far. To me, he was so deeply hurt and damaged by all this revenge thing, that I cannot believe he would ever be able to forget and live his life happily after all. Even the fairy tale about The Serpent Prince did not have a 100% satisfactory ending. If there was an epilogue, to explain what happens to Pocket as she grows up, and how Simon turned out to be a happy man after all, I would perhaps rate it with 3 stars. Unfortunately, I was left with the feeling that their future lies rather bleak ahead, and that's not the way I want my romances to end.
