Don't bother. Rakoff presents several essays of his various adventures, which lay flat on the page and mostly fail to entertain.

Very powerful book about two cousins trying to cope with traumas in their past. Ruth White handles an amazing summer with sober revelations with aplomb.

I love chick lit as much as anyone else - but this book was just not so good.

This book was really cool. It is a ghost story within another story. It was extremely unique and captivating and it kept me guessing. It also caused me to start Jane Eyre because it kept mentioning it in the story. Honestly though I would read Jane Eyre first because I'm pretty sure it does give away a big plot point.

This is the 1st novel I've read by Patricia Cornwell and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books in the future.

Three and a half. Went back and forth on this. The first three quarters are very strong, likely due to the willingness of interviewees to reminisce in great detail about the early years. As the book progresses and things get thornier, details get foggier. The last few chapters in particular were a disappointment; not that I needed razor-sharp ghoulish detail but it did seem as though suddenly Salamon's sources were close-lipped about the way things were sorted after Wendy's death. Also I was never entirely satisfied with the way Salamon dealt with the gaps between real life and the way Wendy wrote about her life in her many, many personal essays. Sometimes Salamon would quote from them or borrow details from them, taking them as fact; sometimes she'd call out specific details as false. Although this book wasn't a critical assessment of Wendy's work, I do feel as though not having a way to talk about this gap created a soft spot in the narrative. Same goes for the way Salamon treated the correlations between Wendy's plays and her real life. She'd refer to "the Wendy character" without even a blink, or a justification. While I do think it'd be hard to argue that Wendy's plays heavily borrow from her life, it's a mistake to discuss them as though they're just embellished diary entries. Again, a more thorough discussion of how and why Wendy used her life like this would have been interesting. Salamon floats a theory here and there, but I guess I feel as though in order to discuss this and discuss it well, we need a codex, a standard. But! I did mostly enjoy it. I liked reading excerpts from letters she wrote, those were very good. I was particularly excited to read about New York theater in the 1980s, a decade of theater history that I'm fairly soft on. And it was good to get some outside perspective on her. Reading her books and plays, you think you know! But of course you can't. And you don't. Also once I finished I went right out and bought a bunch of plays to read.
Cute story about a bad boy gone good and a woman drowning in too much guilt to feel worthy of a second chance.

A fascinating book about the rise, fall, and rise again of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre of the SSPX. A traditionalist through-and-through, Msgr. Lefebvre was a man of his convinctions, even enough to stand up to the Pope. A remarkable book that darts in and out of time to weave together a compelling story of this great man's life.
3.5 Dagnabit! I was expecting more! There's a lot of sex in this one; sex that I found needless at times. And honeslty, I skimmed some here parts because Elena and Rappael do end up in bed half of the time. Formula: A Situation. A Face-off. Someone is hurt either physically or emotionally. A tell me/show me. Then an "Oh, you're hurt" or a "How dare you get hurt!" Then bed. So, yeah... it got boring at times. But all that aside, I cannot find it in myself to consider Archangel's Consort a complete let down. (a.)The source of conflict was pretty intersting (an awakening "Ancient.") (view spoiler) (b.)There's the seven. We find out more of the Seven's background. (Do these guys get novels of their own.. or do their stories develop as a secondary plot to Elena and Raphael.)(c.) And not surprisingly, we get to know more of raphael. in the previos installments we saw into Ellie's history, her family, her father and sisters. It seems to be Raphael's turn. AC could have been better BUT I'm still a fan.
And the adventures of Jacky Faber continue!
