I'm going to read this book just because it has my name in it. Finished this book and it was really cute. Since the witch, Kendra, ended up being so cool I was pleased. I would give this a 3 1/2 if I could.

Yes I liked this book. And I'm totally freaked out by this book. Shteyngart's dystopic future is just not too far off a future, where mega corporations own the United States, citizens are reduced to consumers, and youth and sex are pornography are modus operandi. Too close for comfort! And how impossible them to find and sustain true love, if true love is even possible in those climes. How is it even possible in our hyper-fast society? Super sadly, I don't know. I did quite enjoy his renderings of experience of being a second generation immigrant, that impossibility of being yourself and your parents' child. And I can totally believe that yellow fever will explode in the future. Asian women will be the new hot assessory.

I was going to write a review about this book, but then I remembered that I don't remember anything about it. I read it last month and it has already slipped from my mind. I love coming of age novels, but this protagonist is barely memorable.

I loved Sam Lipsyte's first novel The Subject Steve and was so excited to read Home Land because it was so critically loved. I however, was completely disappointed. While vastly different, it reminded me a ton of The Catcher in the Rye, a book I do not like at all. The tone of this novel is just so negative. I couldn't get past this, leaving me unable to enjoy it one bit.

** spoiler alert ** I loved Meg's story. Having had glimpses of her in previous books you know she's a strong independant woman, she's a McKettrick and she does things her way. After the family business goes public she's a self proclaimed rancher who has daily conversations with her deceased great-great-great grandfather, Angus. Old Angus sticks around to remind her she needs to plant her feet. She longs for a baby but there's no potential fathers in sight until she hears old flame Brad O'Ballivan is back in town. He's decided to retire as a Country singer and leaves the bright lights of Nashville behind. My favorite part was when he drives to their old hangout just to feel close to her. Within minutes she shows up as if some magnetic force has pulled her there. In the blink of an eye, she not only has a man but also a half-sister is dropped on her doorstep - instant family. Appearances from other McKettricks reminds her that she is a part of this big crazy family and they will go to great lengths to protect her, whether she likes it or not. Funny excerpts: (Meg has a meltdown when her sister goes into labor) "Oh my god" Meg ranted. "Her water just broke!" "Margaret" Eve said, "get a grip - and a towel. I'll be there in five minutes." (After her sister is off to the hospital and Meg comes close to hyperventalating) "Shouldn't we have called an ambulance or something?" Meg fretted. "Oh for heavens sakes," Eve replied. "You don't need an ambulance!" "Not for me, Mother for Sierra."

Il genere è fantasy-romance, perchè racconta della storia d’amore tra due ragazzi, ma al tempo stesso (stranamente!) ci sono di mezzo i vampiri! Nonostante l’autrice scriva libri per adulti, penso che sia destinato ad un target prettamente adolescenziale. Ii libri in sè sono carini e leggeri da leggere, sicuramente leggerò il seguito, ma non sono questa gran cosa, sicuramente non sono paragonabili con la saga di Twilight e Harry Potter. Un punto a favore per l’atmosfera di mistero durante il primo libro che rende la storia travolgente e piena di colpi di scena, inoltre fino a quasi la fine non si capisce bene come siano assegnati i ruoli nella storia. L’unica cosa che non mi è andata molto giù è che i libri sembrano un incrocio tra la saga di Twilight di Stephenie Meyer, la saga di Harry Potter di J. K. Rowling, The Vampire Diaries di Lisa J. Smith e un po’ Gossip Girl!!! Sembra che le autrici ultimamente si scopiazzano l’una con l’altra! Il secondo volume invece merita molto di più, a mio parere. Insomma se cercate una lettura leggera, veloce e romantica ve li consiglio!
