I almost didn't want to finish this book, because then I would have to admit that the story was over.

This was such a great book! I was once again amazed when I think about all the things people had to do just to exist! I too am very grateful for all our modern day conveniences, my life is sooo easy in comparison. I love all her one liners about her husband, "Home again, handsome and onery" and "crying over that man is a waste of water" and my favorite "taking up marriage is a good excuse for taking up cursing, I think". They are such a great example of a couple truly in love, but still truly real. I agree that I don't like the ending, why couldn't they just leave it with them living happily ever after.....I would have given it a 5, but I'm so addicted to happy endings.

Like the Harry Potter series, these books are marketed with a "children/young adult" jacket and an "adult" cover. This is fortunate, as one won't have to feel like a creeper hanging out in the jouvenile fiction area while picking this one out, plus will not be subjected ot a viewing of all the crap out there published for young readers. Speaking of which, is RL Stine still around? Anyhoo, this set is ideal for some sort of visual incarnation, whether live action, animated, big-screen or mini-series.
Read this on vacation at the beach...was compelled to read it, and wouldn't go back out to the beach. Daddy did not appreciate that.

** spoiler alert ** I'll admit that I was not impressed with this book. Well, that's a lie. I was really impressed by this book, it was amazing. But everybody who told me to read it said it was just this amazing, awesome, ridiculously intelligent story that I would read in a full day and just fall in love with. Uh...that didn't happen. The story kinda felt like another dystopian novel. Tris (the man character) is one of the very few main characters who actually sticks out to me. The relationship didn't much fly but I'm not much of a relationship expert either. The book had some parts where it surged the story and made it much better than what it was heading two. But it really wasn't until the end that I found everything...real. I guess? ***SPOILER**** BIIIIGGGG ****SPOILER***** I fell in love with this book towards the end right when her mother is killed and Tris falls to the ground. Then she forces herself up and realizes that she is brave. And then I really fell in love with this book when she shot her friend Will in the head (for good reason) And her dad's death was very surprising. But it's not a 5/5 star for me. I'll definitely be getting the second one.

Yes, I read this. All the way through. And I loved it. The setting: Russia, as Napoleon rises to power and decides to attack it. The cast: a suddenly-wealthy young man named Pierre, the Rostov family--specifically, their youngest daughter Natalia--and their friends. It's long, true, but feels like two or three books packed into one. Russian novels, as I am beginning to discover, know how to infodump without being irritating or dull. How? Usually they're talking about the characters and their backgrounds. As we go through the various battles, Tolstoy outlines them for us beforehand so we aren't confused. They explain only what we need to know, and in a tongue-in-cheek way. The political intrigues are all military, the characters are distinct, and this book is just plain awesome. One begins to run out of words to describe its beauty. There's a particularly funny section about the ways different nationalities react to crises that I wish I could remember, and shall have to go look up. Read this. Take your time, pace yourself, read other things at the same time, but read War and Peace. It is not a classic for being boring.

There has been a lot of buzz about this book and for good reason. At over 600 pages, this book is a whopper but I flew through it. This book had everything I love about a good book. There's a little bit of history, a little mystery, a little romance and an overall story that pulls you in and doesn't let go until the last page. This is the perfect kind of book to curl up with when you have an afternoon of nothing to do but read. Sira is an interesting character. She's smart but she seems to go wherever the wind takes her. When she ends up stranded in Morocco after her lover leaves her. It's up to her to make it on her own. Going home isn't an option; it's the late 1930s and Sira's native Spain is falling into war. Sira goes through many different stages throughout the book but the story is still totally cohesive. The other character that I fell in love with is Candelaria. She's a schemer and always seems to know what to do next. I loved the scenery in this book. The settings are so vivid. I've never been to Morocco (it's definitely on my bucket list) but the way Duenas writes, I felt like I could see the streets. I felt like I was on the train with Sira. It's fantastic! Bottom line: You'll get lost in this book!
