I hate having to give any book such a low rating. I really do. But this one was... basically incomprehensible, I guess. I started reading this series when I was twelve, and even though I don't read as many cozies in general anymore, this is one series that I always read, out of loyalty, or nostalgia, or something. Some of the earlier ones really were quite good. Unfortunately, I think Mrs. Braun is overdue for retirement. Or at least needs a serious editor. Was there even a mystery in this mystery? Sort of vaguely, I guess. But there was no coherent plot, and the characters acted very out-of-character, and the writing was disjointed. It made me sad.

Great book, actually. It talks about the meaning of tears in different cultures and civilizations, which I really love. It is a smart book. It also demystifies tears, which many see as a sign of weakness, and discusses emotions and gender, which is great because it just makes explicit what we know as societal norms. The discussion of the politicians and emotions was very interesting especially in light of the upcoming presidential election. The author contrasted the presidential candidates, the cold Hillary Clinton against the transformation of Bob Dole as mocking emotional presidential candidates to one that openly showed emotions during President Reagan's funeral. Also a discussion of Bill Clinton as being trained to allow tears to flow readily as soon as he was on camera. The author also discussion the physiology of tears and that part was a bit over my head and consequently boring, but overall, this book was a much more interesting read than History of the Smile.

Looking for Alaska was an intoxicating book. The character of Alaska was dark, mysterious, and somewhat of a force of nature. She affected everything and everyone she was involved with. I adore John Green's unique writing style. I have to say, though, due to the content of the book, adults may not find it very amusing. With all the drugs, smoking and sex, it doesn't surprise me a couple readers were a little shocked. But to me, as a teenager, I found the content very honest. Most authors would hesitate to put such content in their books. But the lack of censorship really contributed to the storyline, for me. But hey, that's just my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed Looking For Alaska. The "After" section was slightly slower paced, but I still enjoyed how the book made me think.

Well, I really liked the first two books in this series, and generally I love historical fiction, but this was a bit much. The plot line was pretty good, but periodically they would interrupt the story with a several page "history lecture" that seemed only slightly related to the plot. The book would have been much better without these historical tangents (although they were very detailed, and somewhat interesting they did not belong in the middle of the book - perhaps as an appendix or something). It was an okay read.

So perfect. I particularly liked how the two books within it ("Franny" and "Zooey") echoed the structure of the two Pilgrim books, one about going out in the world and talking about the Jesus Prayer, the other a dialogue concerning the Prayer. Salinger, you clever bastard.

Even better than I was expecting, and I was expecting a lot. The Woman in White has compelling characters, memorable villains (I want to get a pug and name him Fosco), a twisted plot, some truly harrowing scenes, and prose that is both crisp and intimate. All the interpersonal formality of Victorian England is present, even as the heroes and villains struggle to gain the upper hand over one another, which increased the anxiety this novel produced in me. (As I read, I would find myself silently urging the heroes to drop the courtesy and just run! Needless to say, they never took my advice.) I was also happily surprised to find such a strong female character at the center of a novel written by a man in the mid-nineteenth century. Marian Halcombe could easily give a character like Jo March a run for her money, particularly since Marian kept her cool under far greater terrors than the little women suffered (and understandably so, of course--this being a "sensation" novel rather than a "realist" novel). I hesitate to say much more than this because the book is so filled with plot twists that explaining even the most basic plot elements would inevitably give something away that the average reader would prefer to be surprised by. So let me just say that if you enjoy Gothic fiction, adventure fiction, mystery novels, or novels set in the provincial countryside circa 1850, The Woman in White is definitely for you.

This one took me a long time to read, but it was well worth it. Filled rich though deeply flawed characters (in fact, most are quite despicable), in the youngest of the brothers Alyosha, it has one of the most steadfastly genuine and optimistic characters I have ever encountered. It is not a tale for everyone because the prose does get caught up in tangential details, but that is one of the things I love about it. And despite the heavy themes and melodrama, Dostoevsky still interjects a wicked sense of humor throughout, which makes it all the more palatable. I only wish I understood Russian so that I could read it in the original text.

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein (1997)
really good, the story is intriging but listening to it Books On CD was kind of hard to follow since the names and some other things seem to be in french. Also the dates were hard to follow at the beginning of each chapter. but the Story itself was pretty good.
I loved the first book, and really liked this sequel, but not as much. It takes the main characters and shows how they have to adapt what they learned in their wilderness exile to life back in their homes and high school (which is a pretty scary place). It's a good story about how even one person can make a change, and that when it comes right down to it, we are never alone, there is always someone there to back us up or stand beside us.
