Picture a world where a virus has rendered everyone over the age of 18 infertile. What are married couples supposed to do if they want children? That’s right! Hire a surrogate. In this world there are Professional Surrogates who enter into strict contracts with couples to provide them a baby. These surrogates are required to Bump in order to get pregnant – it’s strictly business. The boy and girl will probably be total strangers and most likely never see each other again after the pregnancy test shows a postive result. These surrogates are chosen strictly for their genetic and physical traits. Some girls are Amatuer Surrogates – not quite good enough to make it Pro. They Bump with anyone they want and then hope to find a couple willing to purchase the offspring. Melody and Harmony are identical twins who were separated at birth. At 16, they were able to looking into their birth records and found each other. Melody, a Pro Surrogate, was less than thrilled to find there was someone in the world exactly like her. It hurts her chances in business. Now she can’t be promoted by her agent as unique. Harmony couldn’t be happier to have found Melony. As someone who is neither Amatuer nor Pro, she looks forward to preaching to Melony about God and hopefully prevent her from living a life of a sinning surrogate. Megan McCafferty does an excellent job building this futuristic dystopian world. The word play alone is enjoyable. The media bombards these young tweens and teens with advertisements, clothing, and music encouraging drug use in order to help the teens relax. Condoms have been outlawed and the term baby is considered a nasty word because it encourages affection for the Bump. Harmony and Melony’s lives are turned upside down after a case of mistaken identity leads them both down paths they never imagined. When you get to the last page, you’ll ask yourself, “How long do I have to wait for the sequel?”

Not great, slow at times (but likely cos I was confused much of the reading), but fun in parts and spurts. This world spoke to the design geek in me. Will I read book 2 in the series - yes. Will I read book 2 soon - no. Will I likely regret reading book 2 - yes. Do I curse Fforde for making me care what happens to Jane and Eddie - yes.
lovely, silly, humerous, & written in the special way that reminds you what language used to feel like on the page.

This is very interesting, if not a big long-winded, book regarding architecture and love.

I wasn't expecting to like WH as much as I did. The story is very engrossing and poetic. There is a dreamy quality to it caused, I think, by the narration, which leaves you once removed. The setting in the moors and the weather also play huge parts in the misty feeling that comes over you while reading. At times you really feel like you're curled up by the fire, suffering from a fever while the story is told. I was a tiny bit put off by the soap opera lamentations of Catherine but soon accepted it as part of the story. What I loved most about WH was the depth. The more you think and read about it, the more themes and subtleties you see in the story and characters. I just began Jane Eyre to compare the Bronte sisters and I think Emily's writing has more depth and fine tuned beauty. WH fully captures the scene and characters with out the extraneous words and plodding narration that annoys me in JE.

I enjoyed the writing in these books enormously, good stories, entertaining. However, as the novels progress I find myself disliking Dan Shepherd more. He really needs to give it all up and go back to the SAS for the sake of his son. Maybe in #8? It's next on my list to read.

Too much action, not enough thought, but by now the author has created a world in itself and unforgettable characters that you care about. Hope she finishes the series as she planned.

Now that I'm older I see there are some obvious references to Christianity but I try to enjoy the stories instead of over analysing. All the books are definitely worth a re-read. Narnia will always have its magic.
