Alexis Zuñiga February 24, 2011 2/24/11 The name of my book is “American Psycho” by Bret Easton Ellis. American Psycho revolves around Patrick Bateman who is good-looking, intellectual, and sophisticated. By day he works on Wall Street earning a fortune to add to his already exorbitant other fortune. At night he does things we couldn’t even imagine. Throughout the story his psychological state of mind is questioned, and whether he is sane or not becomes a big question in the book. My thoughts are that he is clearly insane and that most of the things he claims he has done or describes are only in his head. In the book the main character Patrick Bateman is an arrogant, confident, man in the prime of his life with the world in the palm of his hand. At first that is all he seems like. Then throughout the story you learn more about him, about his dark humor and his extensive knowledge on various serial killers. It doesn’t seem like he is a danger at that point, but definitely a strange individual. His condition severely worsens throughout the book, describing his grisly murders to exact details. Talking about how he murdered a homeless person, mutilated, tortured, and ate people. The sanity he has left disappears slowly and eventually he is in a very degenerative state, even believing that a Cheerio is being interviewed on TV. At first he seems absorbed in himself- conceited even- but he seems normal. It still seems he has morals. “…“Oh yea” Preston says. “Listen I remember. Because the last time I fucked a nigger she stole my wallet.” He starts chuckling immediately and after a short moment of silence, the table cracks up too, except for me… “It’s not funny,” I say. “It’s racist.”” (pg. 38). In this instance he seems offended by a racist joke. Although he seems self-absorbed he still seems to have some common decency. But what he does later makes one think why be offended at this? It may be that the monster he has within is under control, for now. Throughout the story he starts expressing some psychotic thoughts that could be seen as innocent, but with the great details he gives in thinking or saying what he wants to do to someone is enough to believe that he means it. “…I’m tempted to gut McDermott with it right here in the entranceway, maybe slice his face open, sever his spine.” (pg. 52). He always brings up a knife with a serrated blade that he has in his jacket or briefcase, always making comments on how he would use it and what he would to people with it. At first it’s just talk, but that’s not the case later. Eventually it just starts coming out into normal conversation, while talking to people he just mentions that there’s someone’s head in his freezer, or that he is evil and psychotic. When he says this to people they either perceive it as a dark joke or misunderstand him completely. I recall a part where he talks about Ed Gein (another serial killer) and how when he saw a girl he thought two things; that he wanted to treat her good and that he wanted to see what her head looked like on a stick. He told that to some of his friends who perceived it as a tasteless joke and laughed uncomfortably. He then becomes uncontrollably insane and starts describing horrible murders. “Her breast have been chopped off and they look blue and deflated, the nipples a disconcerting shade of brown” He just describes in the utmost details him biting women’s nipples off, trying to make one into meatloaf, but eventually getting frustrated and smearing her blood on the walls. He even gets a rat into one girl, and I don’t like to think about how he does it. He is one sick fuck. Then towards the end he completely loses his mind. It’s not just the killings anymore but other things. He starts being careless with his killings, unlike before where he was extremely careful, he also thinks that his automated teller is sending him disturbing messages and that a park bench is stalking him. In conclusion I stick with my thinking that he is completely insane and he thinks he did all the things he describes although he hasn’t done it. This is as great book and if you aren’t easily grossed out it’s a great read even though it is abhorrently disgusting.
