This book changed my life. When I first read it, I felt like my life was on the page. I first read it over 15 years ago when I was a teen ager. As I grow, I see myself in the book, in the stages presented as parallels to the life of the Buddha. I expect that I will find more of myself as I grow and enter different parts of my life. It asks, and answers, universal questions. The book is a about a boy whose life mirrors that of the Buddha. But he is not the Enlightened One. He undergoes the tribulations of life, with its austerities, its pleasant comforts, its loves, and its despair, all represented by his journeys. He ends his days as a ferryman, a man whose whole life is of humble service, even though his potential was great, almost supernatural. But in the end, it is not the Enlightenment of the Buddha he realizes, but rather a wisdom accessible to those of us who are mortal.

As formulaic as an episode of The A-Team. But who doesn't like the freaking A-Team, huh? The author shows some faint signs of wanting to include a fully-developed female character here, which is better than nothing, eh?

I believe this was my first biography. I don't remember how old I was when I read it, but I do remember crying in the end when his daughter kept her last name in memory of her father. I don't think I'd read it again, but I now have a better appreciation for "'Who's' On First?'".
Sad, sad and sad! Three people trapped in a triangle of tradition and modern society- all are miserable and waiting.

This was my common book at Otterbein--the book that all incoming freshman have to read in an attempt to unify them. The author comes to speak and sign copies of the books, and the entire year sort of centers around this book. Reading it over the summer with no guidance was pretty tough. The book jumps back and forth across several time periods, and I had a hard time keeping up with what was happening when, and why. I ended up rebelling, and read the entire book chronologically instead, so I got a completely different view of the story than my classmates did. A book about Jesuits in space didn't seem like it would be that great, but in the end I really enjoyed it and I even bought the sequel, Children of God, although I have never actually read it. This book is as much a story about space travel as Life of Pi is just a story about a kid on a boat. Read: not at all. It all comes down to faith--what we have faith in and why, and what happens when our faith shatters as it sometimes can.
OK, I didn't actually read this one... :)

A book everyone should read and live by. If we all followed the Four Agreements in out everyday conscious living, this world would be a much softer place.
