Bout time I got serious with some financial things - and this book seems pretty powerful, with down-to-earth advice on LOTS of different areas. I like the way the author has a no nonsense approach as well.
"An early collection of Stephen Jay Gould's essays from his column in Natural History magazine, The Panda's Thumb was an enjoyable read, assuming you like natural history. It's the third of Gould's collections I've read, and the earliest I've read as well, but it held up well over time. Composed in the late '70s -- '78 and '79, I believe -- the essays in The Panda's Thumb bear the mark of Gould's charming, articulate style ..." All I remember about this book is that I have been searching for it ever since I read half of a friend's copy in college and then forgot the title - that and a few scenes. Unbelievably vivid.

Love this author! This book will make you think & also tug at all heart strings! I really loved the ending of the book. Not prediciable at all. I’m not a religious person at all, not really know how I felt about this book except for I felt like the preacher was kinda “brainwashing” half the time. If it matters, I was for Zoe’s side! LOLIt’s about a couple that’s married & has several miscarriages along with 1 still born at 28 weeks. The husband decides he can’t be married to her anymore and leaves. She is a music therapist that comforts sick children, senior citziens as well as trouble students at a high school. She befriends one of the counselors at the school & they become really close. The husband is an alcoholic & goes to the bottle after the divorce. They also have frozen embriyos (sp?) at a center. Zoe (wife) gets remarried & decides she wants to use them. The husband has straightened up, moved in with his Bible-Thumper brother & wife & he finds God thru church. He decides he wants to give the embryos to his brother/sister in law since they have fertility problems also. Then there’s a court battle
Don't just read No Exit - the respectable prostitute is awesome too.
I selected "Headlong" as a monthly pick for my bookclub since I had read positive reviews and the book had been shortlisted for the 1999 Booker Prize. Not everyone in my book club enjoyed it or for that matter even finished it. Then again, that book club was notorious for not reading the book. I had mixed feelings about Frayn's art history farce. I hadn't know that much about the Dutch masters, so was happy to be exposed to Bruegel and learn a little bit about his art by reading this novel. A big portion of the book goes into 16th century Dutch politics, art history and very detailed descriptions of Bruegel's painting. Some of these lengthy descriptions were boring to me. I had never seen Bruegel's art before and Googled to check it out after reading the descriptions in the book. The book definitely wasn't a light or quick read, but I did learn something from it--which is always good.
