I love mixed media and these books are filled with vivid art and language. There is some magical realism to the plot, and it's also a breathtaking love story. Some couples have songs. My college (and post college) boyfriend (who was an artist) and I (at the time, a fledgling poet) had books, and this set of books was at the very top. i'm starting to think that Hermaphrodite literature is becoming its own genre. I was a little skeptical that the gender-bending focus of this book was going to be a re-working of books I've already read. However, Winter's depiction of a hermaphrodite child from birth to young adult set in the sometimes harsh beauty of Labrador was incredibly moving. A book that made me think more deeply about the world around me. I always enjoy it when that happens.

I'm still traumatized by my encounter with Anne Rice's personal sexual and status fantasies and neurotic fixations. In the Mayfair Witches trilogy, they are presented in a less censored and less palatable form than anywhere else. It's a shame, really. There was promise in the creepy first chapters and in the occasional odd moment further on. Even those moments are absent in the next two volumes.
