The book freedom writer is a bunch of diary's from the students. In the book they tell their story's. in one diary he is talking about a time when there is a big fight. While they was fighting he was just watching. As he wasgetting closer to the fight he was hit. As soon he was hit he was apart of the brawl. He said that the fight was about five min. then he was hit with a football helmet. then sercurity came and they had to leave. When there is a fight in school i neverget up to close. i just watch from a distance. i tell people to never get so close because you can be apart of it. i dont even know why people fight in the first place. there is no reason to.

Such a sweet little story about friendship. Has very few words per page which makes it a great bedtime story in my opinion.

Got this to read during a vacation I recently took. It is a slow start, and I am reading in spite of some negative press... I will let you know what I think! Update. After a slow start for the first 50 pages, I have devoured the next 500 in less than a week. This book is mesmerizing, creative, and well written. Still have another 500 pages to go, and only wish that I had not had the spoiler (i.e. presumably they kill god at the end!). Completed! Ok - If you are easily offended by opinions and ideas that are contrary to your faith, please consider a pass on this book. I can see how it will offend many people's faith. That being said, controvertial as "killing god" sounds, that will be one of the smallest offenses this book might bring to your faith. You see, while this book is fantasy, and should be read as such, many of its themes enbrace what have been myriad "heretical" Christian teachings over the course of history. Your eternal destiny, heaven, hell, deity are all challenged in this Author's fantastical book. All of that being said, this book truly does have a magical way about it, and not the type of magic we see in Harry Potter! If you can take a little abuse to your faith, please read this wonderful book.

After having read it for the third time -- once in high school, once in college, and now, with my juniors -- I can say that I have finally developed an appreciation for this text. It's like Hawthorne. It took awhile for that "click" to occur, but it did occur. Fitzgerald sure can write a sentence, I'll give him that.

When one is writing about a female serial killers it is good to know a little about them. Unfortunately, a little is about all anyone knows about them. Making murder look natural and keeping their secrets to themselves is one thing women serial killers are remarkably good at, unlike their male counterparts.

Ha Jin is wonderful at creating novels that assert the primacy of the individual in the face of massive historical forces. In this case, he tells the story of a young graduate student who is assigned to take care of his professor/future father-in-law who has just had a stroke and who, in his hospital ravings, increasingly reveals the person behind the masks he wears as a professor in a Chinese university in the late 1980s, a person both more complex and more petty than he normally chooses to reveal. The student finds these revelations both fascinating and unnerving. All of this occurs in the shadow of the Tiananmen Square protests.

erhaps as penance for all those Iowa jokes I laughed at when I lived in Minnesota, and also because the first Iowa book I read, Ed Gorman's NEW IMPROVED MURDER, was a good book but a little short on Iowa-ness, I decided to read another. So I picked Donald Harstad's ELEVEN DAYS from the selection at http://www.stopyourekillingme.com. What a page-turner it turned out to be! ELEVEN DAYS is a police procedural told in the first person by a county sheriff's deputy in northeast Iowa. It was Harstad's first novel and I'm happy to see there are several more. Apart from weather, there's not much description of the landscape in this book, but the people are Iowa through and through -- not caricatures either, just -- right. I was a little worried when I saw that the tale involved Satanic killings, but the Satanist angle was handled very sensibly with no hidden agenda that I could see. There are some pretty intense descriptions of gory scenes -- not for the truly squeamish. Harstad pulls no punches and the ending was a complete surprise to me. An excellent book, and one I might never have read but for my "project."

This book was an interesting biography of Mars Hill Church in Seattle. I enjoyed reading about the different struggles of each phase of the church from Mark Driscoll's perspective. I even laughed out loud several times throughout the course of the book. This was a fairly easy read, and if I was in vocational ministry (especially church planting), I would have found it even more helpful. I think everyone can learn something from this book.

A story of a fiction writer giving scholarly talks, which are included in the text. The character's compelling, her ideas are interesting, the writing's beautiful. I loved this book.
