I enjoyed this book, although I admit it was a bit dull for me at times, most likely because I didn't understand it. The one thing I really enjoyed about this book was the comparison of American and Indian cultures. It was also fascinating to read about American culture from the perspective of a person from a different country.

Who would have thought a ghost story could turn into an interesting read! The lead character is NOT a likable person at the beginning of the story, one kind of gets the feeling he deserves that he gets. The ghost, on the other appears to have NOT redeeming qualities, and gets worse as the story progresses. Who would have thought you could buy a ghost over the Internet!?!?
Landover was ok. Shannara rocked. but this series is by far the best of Brooks. A must read for any modern day sorcerer. (That means you, Brian)

Wow. It’s so hard to know where to start with this review, because this is one of those books to end all books. Where to go from here? I don’t have a lot of postapocalyptic fiction to compare it to, but it comes at it from such a poetic, intimate, necessarily personal angle that it overshadows anything of its kind in recent memory. It’s like the dreams I had post-911, but fleshed out in quotidian detail, fleshed out to the nth degree, and then some. It’s the kind of book that makes me stop wishing my husband would finish painting the bathroom because it doesn’t really matter – it destroys any remnant of materialism. But despite its all-encompassing bleakness, the love at its center reminds me to spend an extra couple of minutes with a student, a fellow teacher, a friend. It makes everything that’s important matter more, and everything that’s not important matter less. It’s death, but death with a lyrical understanding of the human condition. While it tramples on the fragility of our ideals, it offers an often unimaginable hope in the midst of unimaginable devastation. Does that sound trite? Yes. But this book is anything but trite. Lyrical to a fault in a few places? Sure, but those places are minimal, and I think he earned them b/c what else would we be left to think about at the end of human existence, once the bare-knuckled survival instincts have been met? And did I mention that it’s immensely readable? I can’t imagine being inside Cormac McCarthy’s mind while he crafted this. Either a purging or a sacrifice. Either way, we are the better for it.

I loved these two books. They kept my interest and I loved all the twists and turns of the plot right through the very end. Left me wanting more.
This is one of my favorite "There Was An Old Lady.." books. Perfect to be read in the Fall because the lady swallows fall related items. Also a great book for a sequencing lesson, for language arts or math. For math, sequencing words such as "first, second.." could be taught with this book.

Interesting historical novel. Set in the times when timber barons stripped the land of everything. Conservation was a new idea and there was a government push to create a national forest in the appalachian mountains. This is the story of Pemberton. A timber baron who goes to boston, falls in love and brings home a wife, Serena. (Meeting their train back in North Carolina is a young girl pregnant with Pemberton's child) At first all is fantastic - however- Serena has very liberal ideas on how to get rid of those against them. Then Serena has a miscarriage and all hell breaks loose.

This is by far my favorite book. The main character, Rachel, was treated very badly. She came back to exact revenge on the one man that made her who she is. She is very patient and exacting. I see this book, not as a trashy romatic love story, but as a very long awaited revenge book. I have read this book so many times and will continue to reread it many times.
