Fascinating memoir in several ways - descriptions of growing up "Mennonite", and life during and after an abusive relationship. Insightful, poignant, funny at times.

I read this book at some point before the age of 18, and remember being capitivated by Buck's seemingly plain but effective writing style and the character of Wang Lung as a guy for whom hard work pays off. Now that I've reread it I have a much clearer picture of what else is at stake here. Specifically, there are lots of ways to critique this by treating it as a portal for Americans into the Chinese culture of its time, but I lack the education to do so intelligently and will thus defer to someone smarter to do this. Instead some quick impressions: Wang Lung is far less likeable on this goaround than he was when I was a naive teenager. He comes off as vaguely ill-tempered despite the Buck's literal insistence that he's warm-hearted. Reading as an adult it's much easier to scrutinize the way he treats his family than it was for me as a kid. But most critically of all is the way in which he remains, through all of his various trials and tribulations, an ignorant, illiterate man, unaware of the cultural upheaval going on in his country. At some level, this doesn't have to matter to a reader of the book. At another level, though, you have to consider the implications.

Great book and dry wit funny! What I liked: The characters! I really like Ella. She is smart, artsy, FUNNY, and has a great reason for a deeply ingrained insecurity about the large scar on her shoulder and part of her neck. She uses her hair and clothes to hide it, but none the less, it provides a barrier for her to really trust anyone in the love department. He best friends are great. Frankie…oh my goodness I SO had a friend like him in high school! I just smiled every time I read about Frankie. Sadie is awesome in her own quiet way. I’m very interested to see this girl blossom if there will be more coming from Melissa Jensen in this world? One of my LOL moments is Ella’s observation of Frankie and his brother Daniel. I enjoy Jensen’s descriptions and Ella’s voice so much: Frankie looks like he might break your heart a little. Daniel looks like he might rip it from your chest, still beating, and bite it. Of course we have Alex. The male leading character whose social status and good looks make him seem so unattainable. However, Jensen does a great job of weaving through this. I enjoy that Alex isn’t stereotypical. Edward Willing is a hoot! I will not spoil his involvement in this story. But, I really like this character too and the dynamics he presents. The romance in this book is sweet, well paced, and not once was I annoyed but it. I felt uncomfortable for a character or two sometimes, but for the scenes, that was what the author wass going for I think. What I didn’t like: I don’t like the Hannandas. You just have to read who this trio is for yourself. Ugh. Overall: I really like this book! I laughed out loud at times. I really enjoyed the voice Jensen created in this book. I would love to be friends with these guys in real life. Not the Hannandas though…they can fly away on the brooms they flew in on.

I'm a Crichton Junkie, that should be stated right off the back. I acknowledge his faults, but love him all the same. This was a characteristic, fast-paced, information packed bundle of a book. It wasn't nearly as detailed as "Jurassic Park" was or as thrilling as "Sphere". The main character actually finds herself in danger fairly infrequently, which is a slight turn off the natural course for Crichton. He does take a rather large crack at news media, fictionalizing Jon Stewart's entire rant about televised news when Jon was just getting started a the Daily Show. It's entertaining, to say the least. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could.

This was one of numerous books I read in the first year of marriage, while new husband was both working and going to school, so I had lots of time on my own. I had a morbid fascination with these characters and what I remember as a dark story. I distinctly remember setting the book down in my lap when I finished it, and as I came back to reality I thought, oh thank goodness, I don't know anyone like these people. I should go back and read it again to see if that was just my innocence at the time. Or maybe I wouldn't judge them so harshly now.

This is a pretty decent fairy tale/fantasy with a little hint of post-apocalyptic goodness going on. Elsha is a sixteen year old girl and a member of a race of people who are "Quelled" - forced to work in mines all day with little food or shelter while suffering abuse from their wealthy, spoiled overlords (the Chosen) who brand them and believe that they can't speak and don't have any intelligence or souls. Elsha has always had a fiery spirit and likes to rebel. She also seems to have prophetic dreams. When she is called to be the handmaiden of the powerful Firelord - who alone is able to locate the only source of fuel on the planet, she hopes to make life better for the Quelled. Elsha's character has a quiet strength, but I wish that she had been a bit more self-sufficient in this book. She seems to go from place to place, collecting male admirers who later on line up to fight her battles for her. It would have been so much more satisfying if she had done her own fighting. It is mentioned a few times in the book that within both races (the Quelled and the Chosen) women are treated as lower than men. They are forced to wait to eat until all the men are finished, and they don't occupy any offices of rank in either society. Elsha laments this quite a few times, but she ultimately doesn't do anything to change it. With her grand (seemingly impossible) plans to change the entire way that her world operates, I would have thought that this would at least be somewhere on her list. This book is written in spare, simple words with little poetry or flowery language. It seems almost like a biblical type fable at times. It's a very quick read, and I was entertained throughout, but I never felt pulled in by it and to be honest I'll probably forget all about this book very soon.

Started this one last night, and could not put it down. I love stuff about Native American legends! The real star of the book is Maggie Mae's voice. I just loved her. She was so strong, confident, and could really handle herself! She actually tells the love interest at one point, I save myself, I don't need you to save me. (Not a verbatim quote). There is plenty of action, a nice friendship, and great storyline. I am not a huge fan of shape shifter fiction, but this one was really good. Why, oh, why did they change the cover? The cover for the arc was perfect and eye-catching, and the snake cover makes no sense! Warning: I craved Mexican food through the entire reading....
