This book was on the coffee table when I came home for Christmas break from Grinnell College during the freshman year. Dad had gotten a subscription to the magazine. Although other issues of Avant Garde contained both articles and high quality graphics, many of them quite good, this issue was entirely devoted to Picasso's erotic engravings which, like most of his late work, didn't impress me at all. There were a lot of enormous organs and outrageous beasts, weirdly represented, but no beauty. I imagine Ginzburg published these works simply because it was original Picasso. I imagine the subscribers were disappointed.

Very interesting history of New York as seen through the oyster industry. Kurlansky is witty and knowledgable, and the book is eminently readable.
This book was amazing!! At first when I read what it was about, it did not seem like a book I would like, but once I started reading it, I loved it from the beginning. Every chapter makes you want to read more! There were I few nights I stayed up until 4am because I had to know what was going to happen next. I defiantly could not put the book done. You feel everything young Katniss feels and more. I'm sure this book will be on my favorites list for along time, and it will be read many more times to come.

I definitely enjoyed this book quite a bit. It's a story about a quirky woman living in a kooky small town. Characters are colorful and inetresting. The premise would seem much more contrived and extreme if it weren't for the skill level of the writing. Definitely a good summer read.

This book resonated with me because the protag had asthma. Omg, amazing, since other than our lung issues we had nothing else in common. I have never run for class president (that I can remember) or eaten a pistachio (I'm deathly allergic).

Okay, I admit it. I cheated. This book was read to me - by Philip Pullman, no less, and a cast of characters. I suppose I was curious to see what the fuss is about. An author for children who appeals to adults, they tell me. I cannot say it was unappealing, but I also cannot say that I can really see the appeal. A wide range of alternative universe scientific discoveries and inventions make it give off a different feel - enough for adults to see the difference - while as a fantasy novel it does not really push the boundaries of a parallel universe very far - perhaps to keep the children happy as they can relate to the heroic Lyra. A central cast of characters are given enough time and depth to make even polar bears appear half-believable - just about believabke enought o keep the adults happy - while as a tale of morality it does not really deal with any areas of grey: black and white views of good and bad prevail - that helps the kids on track. So, it did not really appeal to the adult in me, expecting a sophisticated plot or moral torment. However, I am not convinced that it would really to the child in me either, not considering the length and the time and effort required to blend into Pullman's world of morphing animal-shaped vessels for our souls, aquatic gypsies and conspiratorial clergymen. If I get a chance I may read or listen to the next installment. I really cannot say whether I like this title or not which is most unlike me.
Josephine the Mouse Singer has my heart, but really, there's something here for everyone. He was recently described to me as the only writer ever to milk art out of the trials of bureaucracy, and, while I'm not sure about the superlative, it makes almost makes the world's red tape worthwhile.
