The Bluest Eye Toni Morrison We do not live in a black and white world. There is a lot of grey area, and leeway to ultimately any statement. Toni Morrison, in her debut album, explores race, family lineage and exploitation in one of her best books to date. The main character, Pecola, is the epitome of struggle, of desire, and of wanting to have only what she cannot. The premise of the book is Pecola wanting to have "the bluest eye", something a person of her skin color cannot have. I have read both Beloved and Song of Solomon , and found The Bluest Eye to be unique in that there was not an essence of surrealism that is very prevalent in Morrison's other books. Everything could be taken literally, from beginning to end, with very few exceptions. It was just Toni Morrison, newly published, and willing to pose questions that others would simply not ask. I loved everything I have read by her thus far, and want to read everything she has written. Yes, all of her stories are about African (American) struggle, but they are so much more than that. Written from many different time periods, and featuring many different characters, Toni Morrison presents heavy material not for the weak. All of her three books have left me heartbroken, and in serious thought. I realize I did not reveal a lot about the setting, context, and premise of the book. This is only because I cannot effectively do so, without major spoilers. Read it! I recommend it to anyone, and its not confusing at all (like some of Toni Morrison's other books). Toni Morrison is one of those authors where you can re-read her work multiple times and get something new from it each time.

I don't understand a lot of the negative reviews I've read, not so much because I think Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs was anything great, but because a lot of people seem to take issue with the book's apparent lack of depth. It's called Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs. Sex. Drugs. And Cocoa Puffs. What about it gives reason to expect any depth? I first saw this book at an airport book store and just happened to open it up to the entertaining Saved By the Bell section. Despite my interest, I somehow managed to forget the book's memorable title and didn't come across it again until a few years later. Since I "read" the audio version (Does that even count?) I feel obligated to comment on Klosterman's voice: he sounds EXACTLY the way I thought he would. His voice lies in the intersection of a two-part Venn diagram where one circle is the shrill, over-enthusiastic sound of Quentin Tarantino talking about the merits of some movie no one else would watch on purpose, and the other circle is the condescending tone of Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons. Klosterman comes across as a pompous nerd, but the book's still fun to listen to (read?). I only gave it two stars because a lot of the topics meant nothing to me. I've never seen an episode of The Real World, so the exhaustive analysis of the cast members of various seasons just bored me. I'm not saying it was bad, just that it's something that people who are familiar with the show would probably appreciate more. That also applies to people who can name more than one Billy Joel song. On the plus side, the cereal mascot rant was funny and informative, and I'll never look at Sunny the same way again (though it was kinda weak that Klosterman overlooked the Cookie Crisp wizard because it clashed with his argument). Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs reminded me that you can think someone is a douchebag and still enjoy hearing (reading?) their thoughts.
