Sidney Poitier comes across as larger than life; a better human being than most.

One of the first Hard-Boiled writers I really enjoyed. Figured I'd go back to the beginning and start reading again.

Doctor Who novelist and journalist for the UK’s Radio Times Griffiths follows-up his coming-of-age as a DW-nerd, Dalek I Loved You, with this second book. However, this is less a memoir (although there are some personal tidbits scattered throughout) and more a travelogue recounting Nick and his family’s trips through England to visit roughly two dozen sites where Classic and New Who have been filmed. The best part of this is his website that he refers to throughout, where he has uploaded photos that he took of the many quarries, estates, and back-alleys. Not to mention his recollections and re-viewings of many of the episodes that he made right before hitting their filming locations, the hilarious but all-too-brief appearances by his wife and son, and his unabashed enthusiasm for the Doctor. However, it comes across as a hastily written book that was pushed to premature completion by his publisher after the success of Dalek I Loved You. That is, the narrative feels scattered and unfocused as times, as he haphazardly includes flashbacks, commentary on married life, the death of this mother, and other barely tangential thoughts. With a better editor and more time – not to mention including a color photo pages inserted in the center -- this would have been a better book.

I found this book quite compelling, but sometimes I got bored with the explanations. Still, I can understand the hype and controversy over this book. Very good!
Read it again - still feel the same about it - but the writing is very beautiful, the characters and world building very well done. ***************** I wish there were 3.5 stars -- beautifully written, with terrific and often very touching but humorous dialog, the author brings the old Norse gods to life. However, there is a good bit of assumption that everyone knows the old stories of these gods, and that's annoying and distracting. I found myself running to read about each one on Wikipedia, feeling like I needed some back story. And then, the author turns the practice of religion and the devotion to one God into an evil, twisted, selfish seeking for power over all creation, with "The Word" and "The Nameless" cast in the guise of ultimate evil. Hmmm .... could have been just an attempt to show that one must always use common sense and your own brain and not become a mindless automaton -- then again, could also be a devout atheist trying to tear down belief in anything as Philip Pullman was doing in his Golden Compass series --- so, despite the beautiful writing, the great characters, the twisty and exciting plot, I had to downgrade my recommendation. Definitely not for children -- very descriptive violence.
I can’t believe I saw this book numerous times in bookstores and didn’t care about it. Jane Eyre was sooo amazing! This was one of the best books I have ever read. It was beautifully written and the characters felt real. They were so relatable and distinct from each other. Jane is such a great heroine and I was super glad that I got to read the novel through her eyes. She’s plain and little, but she has a big and brave heart. My fave characteristic of her is she’s very observant. There are also few books that can make me cry and this is one of them. And…Just when I thought that Mr. Darcy was THE perfect man of classic literature, (excluding Peeta of course since he’s from a dystopian novel) I got to read about Mr. Rochester and I can’t help but go “Aww” or smile every time he says something sweet to Jane. He’s so passionate and he has probably the best lines from the book. He’s also funny! I can’t help but laugh at some of his epic lines especially when the scene is supposed to be serious. I also felt his pain when…uhm..read the book. I don’t want to spoil it. Men nowadays should take some tips from him. Oh how I wish he was real. Aside from Jane and Mr. Rochester, I also love Adele. She’s so adorable! This is one of those books that will stay with me for a really really long time. It was such a page turner and truly a masterpiece. Charlotte Bronte is one of those writers that gets to you from page one and will leave you breathless when the last page is read. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone most especially those who are fond of love stories, mysteries, and girl power novels.
How unfortunate that the girls and I have come to the end of reading about the unfortunate events of the Baudelaire orphans. They've been such a part of our end-of-the-day routine that I feel a bit lost without them...
an excellent book for the young adult in your life. and the one living inside your brain. you know you're thirteen.
