I knew this book was going to be good within reading the first few pages. The narration of the ghost, Sir Septimus Spivey is lighthearted and funny, and I love the way the author inserts his opinions every once in a while. The relationship between Jenny and Latimer is very sweet and you can't help but cheer them on. Although Latimer can be very overbearing at times (men!), I love the fact that he is gentle with Jenny and tries to take it slow, rather than panting after her like a dog in heat.

I was intrigued enough by the excellent Italian flick The Girl By the Lake based on this book. For anyone interested, very little is changed or removed for the movie. The titular girl (in the movie anyway) is a couple of years older in the movie. Some minor characters are removed or only mentioned in the movie. Sejer's younger partners sex is changed. And that's about it. Some scenes are condensed and others are combined but otherwise the movie was a great adaptation. I wouldn't categorize the novel as a thriller. It is much more a mystery/police procedural. The pacing of the novel is near perfect. The best description I can give is deliberate. Some might feel it's too slow or plods along but Fossum does an excellent job of taking the characters outside of the case just when those descriptions might become accurate. If you're looking for a book to suck you in and make the mundane interesting, this is it. I have a couple more books in the series sitting on my shelf waiting.

A compelling book that stirs you to action. It makes you wonder how such atrocities can continue to occur post-WWII despite what we have learned or thought we have learned from the Nazi genocides.

...I have absolutely no idea what the point of this book was. It's a whole bunch of machinations, bed hopping, and psychological manipulation with no emotion powering it at all; I spent twenty minutes after having finished it trying to talk myself into having a reaction, any reaction, toward it. At the end of things I just went and had a bowl of cereal. That, and I'm one of those people who loves so hard (and, I will admit, unhealthily) that, when confronted in real life with people who cheat on their partners, I am pretty much always filled with complete disgust and the mindless desire to slap said cheaters silly. The last thing I want is a whole book filled with remorseless, nigh-sociopathic adulterers, which I should have considered when picking it up off the donations shelf. I suppose I should be glad, if only for the sake of my sanity, that the utter dullness of this left no opportunity for it to fill me with rage.

Saphora Warren has finally decided to run away from her idyllic-looking life. After raising three children, she is about to leave her philandering husband when he comes home and announces that he is dying. He asks her to move to their beach home with him(the very place she planned to retreat to alone). As cancer works through him, they each grow and learn through the people they meet, discussions, and personal reflections and memories. I loved the diverse characters and how each one uniquely added to the growth and development of the main characters. At times, both heartwrenching and uplifting, it was really a character driven novel. What is important is where they were at the beginning and where the Lord took them through their lives. I enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, but it had such depth. It is the first book I have read by Patricia Hickman, and I look forward to reading more by her.

Don't you love it when a novelist writes a book on mathematics? For Wallace math is just a hobby - and he knows it really well.

A huge disappointment. After the sheer greatness of Watchmen, and after finding the movie that was based on this book relatively enjoyable, I did not expect something so completely juvenile. Ridiculously heavy-handed with its message, ideas poorly presented, flat unbelievable characters and dialogue, like something made by a sullen black-eyeliner teenager. Good artwork and some suspenseful action sequences is all that saved this one from a one-star in my book.
