My grandmother's house faces this mountain range and it always enticed me. This was a fun young mystery set in the mountain and appears to be the first of more books to come given the hints at the end of the story. Bookends blog post to come with more details.

I believe this is the newest in this antique shop mystery series. A lot of this story was about vintage clothing. Following that other mystery I just read on this topic, it was like deja vu all over again! But this was better written and I'll be waiting for the next in the series.

This is a very funny, very wrong, well character-developed series. Heavy on the anti-hero. And definitely not for everyone.
Somehow unsatisfying.
Read in 2000.
This was a very good book...for a fiction book that is! I like the ending how it didnt end in a corny, predictable way. I loved August's character! I loved her motherly wisdom, patience, and enduring love. Those are qualities I hope to have before I die. This was an enjoyable read!

this book was okay - not sure if i dug holman's waffling narrative tone - speaking directly to the reader, writing in a collective 1st person narrative, with the bulk of the book in third person. i also felt the eye character was not well developed and either over- or under-cast, either case of which could have been better explored with more work. all that said, i enjoyed the historical aspect of the story, particularly in terms of the cholera outbreak and views on the medical community at the time. i also love class issues, and this book has them. it took a while for me to get into this, and i'm not even sure i ever did - more just wanted to finish the book, i think. overall, i give it a 'meh,' average rating.
1987 Newbery award. Of the Newbery winners, this one stands out because of its unique style. It is a quick, straight-forward read. I think it would be very engaging for 8-12 year olds. "What was he looking for, a prince in fine velvets and a crown cocked on his head? Was it clothes that made a prince, Jemmy wondered, just as rags made a street boy?" I like the author's note at the end: "Readers often write to ask if a story is true. This tale is a work of the imagination, but the most surprising part of it is true. Some royal households of past centuries did keep whipping boys to suffer the punishments due a misbehaving prince. History is alive with lunacies and injustices."
