Wow. For such a fantastical premise, this was much more emotionally resonant and culturally relevant than I expected. The desperation of the extreme poor is well painted, and the dismissive attitude of the more fortunate rings true. I enjoyed the animal-companions and the concept of the "animalled" and their relationships.
Enjoyable escapist fantasy novel about a girl who is half vampire. Did there really need to be a six-page sex scene, though???

Basically, Twisted 9 is a collection of Jessica Zafra’s essays on Emotional Weather Report, her weekly column in The Philippine Star. It consists of almost everything under the sun -- gadgets, sportsmen, cats, foods, movie and book reviews, even politics, and the likes. When I read her previous Twisted series (which was Twisted 8 1/2), I gave it two stars. It was okay. I liked it. What I mean is, I liked the cover. It was black. Other than that, I found it a little bit boring, and Twisted 9 was practically the same as Twisted 8 1/2. Jessica Zafra is indeed a very witty and 'twisted' writer. But I guess she was not the type of my author. I'm not sure, maybe her other Twisted series were way better than the two. Perhaps the only topic that interested me on Twisted 9 was the death of Michael Jackson and Cory Aquino (which will be found on the last page!).

This series has now progressed to the point of Richard III's ascension to the throne. Having just read Daughter of Time, it was particularly interesting, but if you don't know your history it might be a bit difficult to follow. Roger is up to his usual detecting.
Originally read sometime between 2001 and 2004

Five Los Angeles cops spend a lazy Sunday together. Four of the men have something in common: their wives all participate in a real estate rehab scheme dreamed up by the wealthy mother-in-law of one of them. But when a murderer targets one, then the second, of the wives, it's time for Lomax and Biggs to find out what, and who is behind the crimes. A culprit is found, and all the evidence shows he is guilty. But wait--we're only halfway through the book, and despite police procedure, Lomax and Biggs decide to clean up a few loose ends--which lead to a totally different conclusion.

D. Travers Scott's second novel, following Execution, Texas: 1987. There's a slightly surreal edge to this tale of four identical brothers and their identical father. It's a mystery in the tradition of Nabokov's The Real Life of Sebastian Knight in which a protagonist tries to ferret out the mystery of the life of a recently-deceased relative. Only in this case the protagonist has fragmented into the four idential brothers.
Really enjoyed this take of history from Lady Margaret Beaufort's POV. Also, this is a perfect example of how religion, and religious fanaticism, is dangerous.

So I picked up this book based on the "hype' I've always heard about Ayn Rand's writing and wanted to see what it was all about. So after just finishing it, I can say the hype is true. I absolutely loved this book...completely broadens your mind! A story well-ahead of its time. It's got everything, philosophy, politics, mystery, action, romance, history etc. The character development is unbelievable! I also loved how the story evolves and you don't know how it will play out...keeps you engaged the entire time while you're reading it. Highly recommend.
