I liked this book that is written as a journal by Cassandra, the main character. Her father is a writer but has only written one book that was a big success but now the money has run out and she and her family live in a run down castle in England and barely have enough food to eat. A new family moves in to town with 2 brothers, Simon & neil. Cassandra's sister Rose is determined to marry one of them and escape this poverty.

This book is a great, quick read - perfect for laying on a beach or just relaxing. Nothing too difficult to digest but keeps you interested and laughing until the end. I always enjoy a chick flick book once a year or so and I'm glad I picked this one!

Very nice, easy, light read! Good story, too!! From back cover: "She'd never had a real home...So it had never been about "what to keep" in her life; she'd not experienced that luxury. Then Juliette Carlton got a call, one that said she'd inherited a fortune - and could she please claim it? Juliette didn't know what to do. She was a down-on-her-luck Las Vegas card dealer with $38 in her bank account. Had she hit the jackpot? Or was it just another loss? At first it seemed the latter. The "fortune" was a dilapidated 14-year-old antebellum house that belonged to an uncle she barely remembered. Beneath layers of dust, every inch of the ancestral home was shrouded in secrets - secrets that would put in doubt everything Juliette ever thought she knew. She would have to decide what to give away. But along the way, she found what to keep..."

fluff - the book tries to deal with weighty issues like womens rights but in the end this is a bad romance novel. It gets a star for detailing what was the magical Chicago Worlds Fair less than 30 years after the great fire.

This was a great book, but it took me forever to read. The first half is basically a travelogue of Bruce's experience following around Arcady, a Russian-Australian whose job is to help design a railroad route through the bush that won't destroy any Australian Aboriginal sacred dreaming sites. This is a huge job, because it includes tracking down the Aboriginal "owners" of each of the tracks of land that the railroad will invade, and convincing them to discuss dreaming sites, a secretive topic. These encounters are really interesting, but then Bruce departs from Arcady for the majority of the second half of the book in order to work on his writing, which means that we get to read through all his old journal notes. These notes, while interesting, often don't have any logical path, so it was a bit hard to get through. They mostly follow his experiences with other groups of nomads, hunter/gatherers, and ostracized/misunderstood races throughout the world. But, there were also a lot of ideas about the nature of man, interspersed with quotations from famous philosophers, anthropologists, social psychologists, naturalists, biologists, etc. Although I'm pretty sure I would have preferred a more solid plot, with "memories," "flashbacks" and philosophical discussions integrated into the story line instead of Bruce's views and memories randomly thrown in, if I had been anticipating it, I don't think it would have bothered me as much. For a travelogue, it was extremely informative and thought-provoking.
A spoonful of sugar in book form. This sweet little book details the adventures of the four Penderwick sisters when they go on vacation for the summer and rent the guesthouse belonging to a snobby mother and her son. Full of the kind of charm found in a 1950's children's series, and completely appropriate for even the most conservative readers.

It was pretty good for a book that incorporates horror and mystery. It was interesting to see how the author incorporated all the childhood fears like being afraid of the boogey monster in the closet and so forth. As well as having copy cat murders.

b- boyle, tho probably 3 1/2 if anyone else. a great writer and plotter and decent idea about a deaf woman who is the victim of identity theft. she and her boyfriend pursue the scum bag, who brings them from california to westchester. but well short of his best novels ("world's end" and "drop city") or short stories.

Though I am hard-pressed to pick a favorite among Madeleine L'Engle's litany of novels, this is a likely candidate. The fourth installment in the Wrinkle in Time series, I adore L'Engle's incorporation of exotic cultures and climes, time travel, and a sense of overwhelming good battling evil regardless of how hopeless it may seem. I especially love Charles Wallace's many "reincarnations" that take him everywhere from the Welsh settlement of Patagonia to the witch-fearing colonies of the early states. I also appreciate L'Engle's consideration of our lives' tiny details ultimately playing out in globally huge consequences. Just talking about it makes me want to read it again!
I really wanted to love this book because Anne is the least known Bronte sister. I wanted her to be the dark horse of Bronte sisters, but Agnes Grey didn't quite do it for me. The back of my Dover Thrift Edition says that this novel is "a landmark in the literature of social history" because it provides a rare portrait of a Victorian working woman and an "moving indictment" of the upper classes treatment of the help. I do applaud Anne for that, and my favorite parts of the book were her descriptions of Agnes' life as a governess, her unruly pupils and her rude employers. Sadly, things bogged down for me towards the middle of the book with too much talk about religion and not very much happening. I just wanted her to stop talking about God and get the romance wrapped up, so I could leave Agnes to the rest of her life. I think that Anne's second novel "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is supposed to be her best, so I'm hesistant to write her off completely. I do love a dark horse.
