I found this book extremely valuable for guiding my two daughters. "Navigating the Road to College" reveals what colleges are looking for, helping your child prioritize where to focus efforts in high school. The book emphasizes clarifying student strengths and passions, and points you toward colleges that fit. Besides being a great how-to book, its reflections on adolescent and parental rites of passage are reassuring and enlightening.

The God Engines I knew this would be dark fantasy...but jiminy. Dark almost feels like the wrong word. Maybe "harsh fantasy" would be a more appropriate descriptor. Because it's certainly that. Some of the sequences were really tough to read (or, in my case, listen to): violent torture, grisly human sacrifice, and an ending that is most assuredly not a happy one all combine to make this a rather disturbing tale. Which isn't to say that it's bad. It's not. Not at all. The world is imaginative and well-developed (if harsh) and the plot follows logically given that world development. The writing itself is excellent and vivid and other positive adjectives. The protagonists and his associates are sympathetic while being horrid, which is a pretty neat trick that Stephen King could stand to learn. Fortunately, for all of the violence and horrors, this is still a fantasy book rather than a horror one. So it isn't apt to cause nightmares or anything. I think the worst thing about it is that it can probably serve as a mirror for a lot of people where we learn that the real monster is ourselves! But that's sort of what literature is supposed to do. So that's really just a job well done. All in all, this is another excellent piece by Scalzi and a pretty good example of the sort of thing that's been making him such a force in contemporary SF.

Entertaining in a rather vacuous way, but absolutely what i needed.

For the most part, I enjoyed the book. I liked the main characters, Carlin and Zeke. They are well matched and their attraction definitely sizzles. Any fan of Linda Howard's love scenes will really enjoy the ones in here. The peripheral characters were also fun. I especially liked Spencer. He was just too cute and I hope he gets his own story! There wasn't much mystery and I never really got the sense that Carlin was in any real danger until the end of the book. So, I would read it for the romance, not the suspense. My biggest complaint about the book was the same issue I had with their previous collaboration, Blood Born. It was so repetitive. I think a third of the book could have been cut out. I was annoyed after the 5th time I was reminded that Carlin really couldn't stay at the ranch and would have to move on soon. Had I not been listening to the audio, I probably would have skimmed passages at that point to move the story along. The character's also had a lot of internal dialogue that really slowed the book down. I couldn't find any info on the next one, but I'll probably continue with the series if it ever comes out.

Read the abridged version.
This is the best book about clones in love I have ever read.
Like all of Doig's books, luminous, wondrous read.
Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, and Trent drive cross-country to the annual witches' conference in San Francisco to get Rachel's shunning annulled. I loved this book, and the hours, not pages, flew. I would look up and be surprised how much time had past. I could have finished it in a day, but I was purposely trying to savor it. It was so engrossing, and yet, not that hard to put down. The characters are definitely the core of this series, and Rachel and Trent saw the most development in this time around. (Poor Rachel. Everyone, herself included, is always so down on her for being stupid, but she's just... idealistic? emotional? with her heart/hormones on her sleeve.) The plot, with it's twists and turns -- some predictable, others less so, was amazing, and the dialog was hilarious. I can't wait until the next one. :)

too many cheesy PoMo tricks (the last 20 pages are a flipbook) but still a pretty touching story. deals w. 9/11 without being overly didactic or moralizing.
