BORING... this book went on way too long.

I learned a LITTLE about Milton's Paradise Lost - or at least I was directed to it. I enjoyed part 1 (Northern Lights) as a simple adventure; part 2 (Subtle Knife) as a more complex, psychological story; more chases; dilemmas; developments of character, esp. Will; part 3 (Amber Spyglass) stepped up another gear altogether; the love, the trip through the underworld; the poignant ending. I read it all in about a week; and most of part 3 in one long night!

So far this book has been utterly dull. I think it may be because I have spent the past couple months reading George R.R. Martin and watching Lord of the Rings and I'm spoiled by extremely well-written novels with impeccable characterization. While the story line is compelling, and I love dragons, the people in this book are extremely hard to relate to. There is story-world vocabulary introduced within the first paragraph that doesn't really get explained till much later. And the characters seem to be moved by something I can't quite grasp and is left in too much mystery for me to really follow or care about. I'm half-way through and hopefully I can make it, but it is really putting me to sleep!

WOW! I'm really surprised that so many people liked this book. It had no character development, too many side stories, the "witty" dialogue was forced and overall, written poorly. Thank goodness it was free or I would have been seriously upset at myself for wasting money.

i've loved all of his books. had been told this one was his best but, as much as i liked it, i found blink and outliers more interesting

Wittiness. I liked "Soul Music" better, but I think I really need to read these in order to get the whole picture. The character of Death is what makes it so good for me.

This is the August 2009 selection for my Book Club and though I would never have reached for this book on my own (which is why I join Book Clubs), this was an enthralling read that I just barreled through. This book also won the Man Booker Prize of Literature (U.K's prestigious) and I almost always love Booker Prize winners. The Narrator is an extremely poor driver from the "Darkness of India", a very small, impoverished village who basically learns the tough way of the streets by driving a private car for a rich but very corrupt family. Though the narrator is a murderer (he confesses this right in the start of the book), you find you are sympathetic to him for he speaks for a huge population of Indians who are poor and can never have any hopes of rising above their servant class. His observations of life in India are acute and educational. The story is narrated over the course of 7 nights and thus the book is split up into 7 chapters.
Picked this up to read for work, but oh, hello, my online life, so nice to see you in print.
This book is the sequel to "Shabanu, Daughter of the Wind" and is a fantastic follow-up. The plot is compelling, the characters complex and you will get a huge dose of life for Pakastani women. This book is fasinating--such an excellent series. Don't miss this one!
