I really resonated with this book, probably for a few reasons, and mostly with the first section in Italy (and dang! now I really want to go to Italy!). Of course there is the whole divorce aspect, and searching for God (although I don't agree with her theology, but there were parts I could relate to), but that was all so long ago for me. I think what I really loved about this book was the perfect timing of learning pleasure while I'm in the midst of this life change where I'm really soaking up the pure enjoyment of day-to-day life. In fact, I read the majority of this book while soaking in my claw foot bathtub last night! I really like the author's writing style and was surprised to learn I had already read one of her books, The Last American Man, a couple years ago.

Didn't love this as much as "Consider the Lobster", perhaps because it was fiction? Not sure. Definitely some interesting portrayals and descriptions of various depressions, psychoses, and other mental and emotional instabilities.

** spoiler alert ** VERY BIG SPOILERS SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE PLOTLINE OF THE BOOK CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED PLOT SPOILERS!!!!! GO DOWN FOR ACTUAL REVIEW!!! I picked up the Hunger Games on a suggestion from my brother. I went into this series not expecting a whole lot. Now, here I am, having read the book five times and finally getting around to a review. The Hunger Games is set in post-apocolyptic North America. It's not a pretty place. It's divided into districts, each poorer than the last. District 12 is where our heroine Katniss lives. She provides for her family by hunting illegally in the woods outside her district. The book opens on Reaping Day for the Hunger Games themselves. The Districts, years ago, tried for revelution and failed. They were squished down by the Capitol and the Hunger Games were put in place as punishment. Twenty-four children (two from each district) are thrown in an arena and are forced to fight to the death. And everyone in the country is required to watch the gore. Katniss volunteers after her sister Prim's name is called. As if itwasn't enough that she was going to die, Petta's name is called as the boy tribute. He is the baker's son, and Katniss has a connection with him from when they were younger. He saved her life, in essence. They make it to the games, where Petta drops the bombshell that he has been in love with Katniss since they were children. Once inside the Games, Peeta does all he can to keep her alive, though she can;t appreciate it at the time. Katniss does her best to stay away from him so she soesn't have to kill him. Katniss aquires allies, one in particular name Rue, who is pivotal to the plot. As time goes on, children die brutal deaths and Katniss tries to stay alive. Eventually she finds out she and Peeta can both live. She plays up the romance to keep them alive, unsure the entire time of how she actually feels. Eventually it is just the two of them, and there are a few twists, ending in a dual attemped suicide and two victors for the Hunger Games. Yay!! Now on to the review! I love Katniss as a heroine. She is so complicated. She goes in expecting to die and is able to come to terms with that. This, however, in no way makes her cold and unfeeling. She is confused and degected and depressed and even happy at times. She has a value for human life that, though she is a hunter, makes it difficult to kill. To survive she does, but it haunts her. Peeta is a gem of a character. There are so few of those like him now a days. He is good down to his core. He is loyal and loving- exactly what the Hunger Games is not. He constantly puts Katniss's life before his because he loves her that much. He can be fierce when he needs to be but is just a good person down to his soul. I love Peeta. I really do. The Hunger games is a book that left me speechless many a time. The twists it takes are crazy. I cried more than once. It is a young adult book, but it's themes are heavy, though some more explored in the later books. Love, revolution, loyalty, trust, poltics. Every decision carries insane amounts of weight. Suzanna Collins is a genius. The plot is original and gripping. The writing is good, and paints vivid pictures. What you would expect from a young adult author. At the end of this book, you will the dying for the next.

This was not as easy a read as "Stiff". Not as entertaining, either.

** spoiler alert ** It took me a week to get even a few chapters into this book. After she ends up in Manhattan, I got so fed up with all of the lying and the irresponsibility (that is supposed to be the funny part of the book) that I couldn't read it any more. I almost didn't finish it. And really, I just skipped ahead to the last several chapters, where she has the "realization" (again) that her habits are wrong. Wait, isn't this the entire premise of the first book? Oh yes. It is. I had checked out the rest of the series but have decided against reading any more.
