Suckers!" Or maybe it's this one: "Almost everyone first realized they were becoming a grown woman when some dude did something nasty to them. ...It was mostly men yelling shit from cars. Are they a patrol sent out to let girls know they've crossed into puberty? If so, it's working." Definitely this one: "This is what I tell young women who ask me for career advice. People are going to try and trick you. To make you feel that you are in competition with one another... Don't be fooled. You're not in competition with other women. It was a little mind racking in the beginning- I was getting jet lag going from France to the US on the west coast, then hopping a plane and going to the east coast. Once things settled down it was very interesting and a great source of knowledge. I will definitely use this book for a great reference. A great learning tool

I first taught this book to my 9th graders in 1970's. They loved it. Recently, my book club sisters wanted to read a classic adventure. Well, there you go! They liked it, despite its coincidences and predictability...it is fun. We actually had a lively, philosophical dicussion.

I have a crush on Trent Harris in all his cult-loving geekiness and this book includes some very funny bits and pieces of bizarre Utah trivia. It includes a copy of the Deseret Alphabet that Bob Moss uses in his amazing art. Unfortunately, the book is VERY badly written, but I guess that only adds to the cultiness of it and it's so short it didn't bother me too much.

WOW! I soooo loved this series!!!! I only put the first book as 4 stars because I liked the last 2 a bit more and I felt like I should acknowledge that. Probably the only reason I liked them better was because I was already familiar with the characters and dying for more! This is a fun mystery series with tons of intrigue, humor, and romance. Thank you, Thank you, Afton!!! LOVED THEM!

Another book that has been on my shelf so long, the sticker on it reads "Now a major motion picture!" Yeah, the movie came out in 1990 and it was a huge factor in this read. The movie is a scene for scene, damn near line for line transposition of this book. So, it felt like I was reading the screenplay or one of those old novelizations I used to read as a kid. The book has a subplot involving a character that the movie wisely drops plus it doesn't show you Moira (Myra in the movie) and Cole's background. So, if you've seen the movie, reading this book is arguably a waste of time. If you haven't seen it, these are vividly drawn characters that are worth a look. The book was written in 1963 but only in a few specific places does it feel dated. I am curious to read more of Thompson's books to see if I'll have a more pure response to any of them. I'm glad I checked this book out even though there wasn't much in the way of surprises. But by that standard, a lot of books just aren't worth the trouble.

Nuggets of profundity and beauty at the onset made me think I was going to get a good spacey read (as in, "have you ever thought of..." in a spacey voice that gets you to think of the universe afresh), but the story gets caught in too-personal recollection that loses its universal appeal. It especially gets caught in remembrance of mild go-nowhere crushes. Anyway, I think my review is falling prey to the same phenomenon... trailing off....

** spoiler alert ** Pre-reading review Oh my god. I wish people would stop comparing every new teen vampire book to Twilight like a bunch of idiots. Twilight DOES NOT DEFINE THE GENRE and it never will. Jesus. More to come when I've actually read the book. ACTUAL REVIEW I'm disappointed in this book. It wasn't bad, but I am frustrated by the fact that the author lied to me. Claudia Gray (pseudonym) set me up to believe one thing and then halfway through the book changed her mind. It was as if she decided to cobble together two different versions into one story. First person POV is the closest you can get to a character. We, as readers, should know EVERYTHING that the narrator knows. I could have bought the sudden "oh I'm a born-vampire and I've always been a born-vampire and I drink blood for breakfast all the time" schtick if there had been some sort of confirmation that the narrator was keeping a secret from us. That's all she had to do. Gray could have merely had Bianca admit that she was holding something back. After the reveal, the pacing picked up and the action was fairly interesting. The surprise about Lucas was pretty good. However, I was still stuck on the fact that Bianca (and thus Claudia Gray) had lied to me about her nature. The book is recommended by LJ Smith, a Teen-Vampire-Supernatural author that I rather enjoy, and yet I'm a little disappointed in her for recommending a story that blatantly tries to present itself as one thing and then "woops! By the way!" does a complete 180 and expect us to pick up what it puts down. No. No that is just bad writing. So I'm starting to think that every single author that tries to jump on the Vamp/Teen/Supernatural/Urban Fantasy bandwagon is just... well a plainly awful writer.
