I actually enjoyed the Forward more so than the book itself. Even though it is chocked with valuable info, I felt as if the 'travel' analogy was a bit forced and the amount of props required for most of the exercises scared me off.

Just a great read. I loved the connected plot lines and the characters. I read this book a few years ago and loved it. I just read it again with my 6th grade class. Loved it again and so did my class.

I figured, hey, I've read nearly everything he's ever written since he left that paper in North Dakota, I might as well read the book that made him a household name (you know, if your household is full of snarky hipsters). Metal. As is often the case with Mr Klosterman, this is more a book about the formative experiences of a Midwestern kid than it is about metal. Sure, he talks about heavy (hair) metal in all the chapters, but it's more about the impact that particular bit of pop culture had on his life than it is a study of the genre. But as a genre much maligned by, well, everybody who didn't listen to it, metal probably shows its worth best through the eyes of somebody who loved it.

This book wasn't at all what I thought it was. All these years, I thought it would be this trippy, completely balmy story, that people read while they were stoned. Turns out, it's just an average book, with a little bit of nonsense thrown in. I really enjoyed the Jabberwocky poem. The rest of the book was just an average children's story. In fact, it was rather a push to get through, which is unusual to me. No matter - it's still a rather referenced piece of literature. The fact, though, that Wikipedia had this to say about it, made me laugh out loud, literally: "The poem is sometimes used in primary schools to teach students about the use of portmanteau and nonsense words in poetry, as well as use of nouns and verbs." Haha, not in primary schools in the States!
