Great book on race relations and the cultural differences that contribute to the gap between cultures in America. Particularly the relationship of blacks and whites.

I took 3 years of French in high school and then promptly forgot it for 10 years!! I decided last year after a failed attempt at learning Italian to get back into French and this is the book I started with. It was a great way to re-introduce myself to the language. It rates right up there with Living Language Ultimate French and the best language tool ever: Get Into French by the BBC and Cambridge University!!!

Excellent suspense/mystery! I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out if a certain person or persons got their just desserts!! From the dust jacket: "When she hears that her younger brother Danny has committed suicide, Sayre Lynch relents from her vow never to return to Destiny, the small Louisiana town in which she grew up. She plans to leave immediately after the funeral, but instead soon finds herself drawn into the web cast by Huff Hoyle, her controlling and tyrannical father, the man who owns the town's sole industry, an iron foundry, and in effect runs the lives of everyone who lives there. As she feared, Sayre learns that nothing has changed. Her father and her older brother, Chris, are as devious as ever, and now they have a new partner-in-crime, a canny and disarming lawyer named Beck Merchant, who appears to be their equal in corruption. Soon, Sayre is thrown in closer contact with Beck and becomes convinced that something more sinister is at play than her father's usual need to dominate people and events. As she sets out to learn just what 'did' happen to Danny, she comes to realize that there are many secrets in Destiny-secrets that hide decades of pain and anger, and that threaten at any moment to erupt and destroy not only her father and brother, but perhaps Sayre herself. Underneath the rigid control that the Hoyles exert over the town, trouble is brewing. Old hatreds foster plans for revenge, past crimes resurface, and a maverick deputy Sheriff determines that Danny Hoyle's death was not suicide, but murder. As tensions mount, threatening to ignite a powder keg of long-held hostility, Sayre finds herself inextricably drawn into a struggle with striking laborers, her unscrupulous father, and her own emotions over the love/hate relationship that is growing with Beck, a man apparently with his own agenda, and mysteries of his own."

I haven't been this captivated by a book in a long time; I could hardly put it down. As an avid family historian, I loved how this book captured the magic of family history research and the detective work that it involves. The author interweaves the stories of three generations of women. Although a little confusing at first, this was a great way to introduce clues to solving the final mystery. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book: "How odd that she should be so moved by the plight of forebears she had only just learned she had." "Will history remember us, I wonder? I do hope so--to imagine that one might do something, touch an event somehow, & thereby transcend the bounds of a single human lifetime!" "And it was from this river that a boat had left, all those years ago, with little Nell on board. Taking her away from the life she'd known, towards an uncertain future. A future that was now past, a life that was over. And yet it still mattered, it had mattered to Nell and it mattered now to Cassandra." I think that was the most important theme of the book for me, that the past does matter, and that coming to know and understand our past, can help us find our future as well. "[Cassandra] had come to Cornwall to uncover Nell's past, her family, and somehow she had found her own future."

Macho, macho man. Snore. I'm one of those philistines that can't appreciate Hemingway. Then again, I love Henry James. That explains a lot.
