I think this book stands to be one of my all-time favourite books. Split as it is between Steinbeck's historical and yet horribly moving account of thirties America and the awful situation so many of its inhabitants were in, and the tragic story of the Joad family as they try to eek out a living. It's just so fantastically written, so knowledgeable, so matter-of-fact and yet just heartbreakingly sad.

This was a creative and original book. Unfortunately, I feel that the author was not consistent in his depiction of autism; when it suited his purposes, he gave his character emotional experiences while portraying him as incapable of these experiences at other times.

This is the most approachable treatment of the subject (tensors) that I have read -- and I have read many books on the subject. To that add the author's excellent treatment of vector calculus and curvilinear coorodinates and the result is a book that is *always* with me as I study physics. No physics undergraduate should be without this book!
While this book started out a little slower, it definitely picked up steam and finished strong! Cat is forced to deal with Apollyon as he begins to gather his ghoulish forces in a show of strength against the vampires. His attempts to gather in secret don't last very long, because Cat and Bones are contacted by some masterless vamps that are worried about disappearing friends. Cat and Bones are on the scene! Along to help are Spade & Denise, Mencheres & Kira and Vlad (he needs a lady!!). Cat receives mixed messages from Marie Laveau (hopefully she will figure them out before its too late). While I do enjoy a little romance, its always nice to follow a series with a couple that bickers a lot, loves a lot and stays together through it all! :0)
Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell revisit the Baskerville home. This book kept me guessing up until the last few minutes!
Sigh. I wanted to like--to love--this book. I wanted it to blow my mind. But while parts of it were excellent, it took me forever to even start it, and even longer to plod through it. Sometimes I just need to accept that philosophy-heavy books are just not my cup of tea. This is one of my friend's favorite books, and I had grabbed it off a shelf in my old office in New York--it still has the business card of one of our European agents, which I used as a bookmark. So the book has a close emotional tie for me... but it just went over my head at times. Maybe I should have started with one of Hesse's shorter books. Or maybe I just need to try again some day. I recognize that there are powerful, beautiful parts of the book; I just wish I could appreciate it that way as a whole.

i've given up on 'sports entertainment' years ago....but it was fun to see names & faces from the 70s and 80s.
I first read this book traveling through Europe. I figured I needed a big book to keep me busy on the airplane and train rides, and it proved a good investment (obviously I read it unabridged, I scarcely see the point in reading a murderously hacked apart novel, unless it is Dickens in which case by all means perform the autopsy). The movie, of course, does not do it justice but I have to give credit to the film for inspiring me to read the book in the first place. Dumas does not greatly tax the intellect but he does tell a great story and there is a certain satisfaction to reading a classic. I'm now attempting to read it aloud to my fiance, but I haven't gotten very far. Perhaps too ambitious a project?
