"Great Novel"

This book is incredibly informative about the different types of medications and techniques used for dealing with pain in labor. I am very thankful for having read it and feel more confident about decisions I will need to make when the time comes.

This book severely disappointed me after loving the DeGranville series so much. It wasn't that the book was badly written, the plot just failed to catch my attention. After getting a quarter of the way through the book, I put it down and just couldn't bring myself to pick it up again.

I don't like Quinn.
The second of nine volumes of diaries written during the 1660s by English public servant Samuel Pepys while he was in his late 20's and early 30's. As Pepys becomes a little more established as a naval bureaucrat under the re-established monarchy of King Charles II, he learns of troubling financial obligations incumbant upon his rising position, and his weaknesses for wine and the theater. He is excited at being the heir of his deceased Uncle Thomas, but finds that the estate contained much less money than expected and business troubles that pre-occupied him much of the year. I learned of this diary through a tribute to Pepys's birthday (23 February 1633) on Garrison Keillor's Writer's Almanac.

Not quite as 'out there' as the other Lindsay novel I have read, Voyage To Arcturus, then again I don't think anything is :). Voyage to Arcturus blazed a trail that no one followed. The Haunted Woman is much more restrained and straightforward, but still quite good in its own way. The scenes outside the House can drag a little bit, especially at the beginning, but the scenes inside the House and especially up the staircase are wonderfully eerie and uncanny. Although it is not without its faults, I did enjoy it.
I was really impressed by the scope and the research that went into this book. Annie Proulx covers a huge range of characters so she's clearly rolling in imagination. But I also found the language to be overly wordy and I would find myself beginning to skim through parts to try to get to the heart of the story which is never a good sign.
A strange little book about a strange little girl.
Another old book without an ISBN. It's a signet from 1964. Planet of the Apes is a classic!!
