A decent book, but the departure from light hearted and happy endings into complex emotional endings is a little odd considering it's a children's series. Though maybe kids were more serious back then. Good read overall, but not astounding.

A fabulous read about the history and use of swear words. It's very well written, by an academic linguist, who's personally fascinated by swearing, so it's far from a dry read. The big swear words are all looked at individually, including their history, etymology and current use. The impacts of culture on the various types of swearing is looked at also. Overall I found it an absolutely fascinating book.

Tankborn is a dystopian novel that is set on a different planet, although it seems much like Earth. It's also science-fiction-ey with the genetic engineering as a predominant part of the society. There are a lot of interesting elements to this book. There's genetic splicing of animal DNA to human DNA to make new GENs with special strengths, tattoos used to hook up datapods to the GENs, a strict caste system, and hover cars! I've always been a fan of hover cars! There's an obvious social message in this book, told through the caste system. The highborns and lowborns are differentiated by their eye and skin color, as well as the clothing and jewelry they wear. The GENs have no status at all as they are not even considered human. These ranks and issues mirror the problems our society has/has had with different races, religions, and economic levels. While I embraced the idea of exploring these issues in the book, I felt like I was being hit over the head with it. There was so much exposition on it from each character, over and over, saying the same things, it got old very quickly for me. Overall, it's an interesting book and worth a read if you enjoy dystopian and/or science fiction novels. *Disclaimer: I received this book for review from the publisher through Netgalley. This book is a hard book to put down because the entire time you're seeking answers. Why? What actually happened? What made it progress to this? Things like that. Things that people asked after Columbine, most recently after Virginia Tech, and after all the other school shootings. Once again Jodi Picoult tackles a sensitive and controversial issue, in an amazingly strong and dignified manner that doesn't have you choosing sides. She did it to the reader in My Sister's Keeper, where the minute you began to go to one side, she presents something where you're suddenly seeing it all from a different angle. Every time you begin to thing Peter was in the right, an angry and upset parent stands up and says something to make you think again. A writer who can play devil's advocate to her own characters is a gifted writer indeed. Nineteen Minutes ends with stunning results. We think we know exactly what happened, but as the story progresses and we delve deeper into various characters psyche we begin to realize everything is not what it seems. I don't want to spoil anything, but if you're like me you'll begin to suspect things earlier on. In the end the book will leave you with a feeling of sad hope, a feeling I never knew existed until I finished this book. I'd say more, but as with other books I've reviewed, sometimes I just have to let the book speak for itself. It's such an amazingly sensitive story, to critique it too much might skew your own opinion going into it. The writing is beautiful, the characters complex and real. That's all I'm going to say, I think you need to find the rest out for yourself.

Honestly, as someone who cares deeply about, and has studied, the representation of race, gender, and sexuality in comic books, I cannot believe it took me this long to read Renee Montoya's coming out story. But now I have, and it is as perfect and heartbreaking and brilliant as promised. Thank you, Greg Rucka, for bringing this to the world, particularly at the time that you did.

Enjoyed this cookbook, but three-weeks was not long enough to make it through even a small portion of the recipes included. Might have to buy myself a copy, and one for my mother too!
