This is my favorite book in this kids' fantasy trilogy by far. I'm not sure I'd recommend the whole trilogy to people, because you have to get through two and a third thick books that I didn't find particularly compelling* to get there, but the latter two-thirds of Inkdeath was awesome, occasionally unputdownable. *Some people, like my mother, adore the Ink trilogy wholeheartedly, but I found a lot of the characters either somewhat annoying or slightly unbelievable, and I found the writing (translated from German) to be just a touch stilted. Inkdeath, however, has much more intelligence on the part of the characters, some really inventive and cool scenes, and a killer plot.

Since I was young, I have been fascinated by Egyptian art and artifacts. I'm sure it started when I was about seven, when the artifacts from Tutankhamen's tomb were brought throughout the US for the public to view for the first time. To this day, I can still go to the Museum of Natural History and spend the entire time in the Egyptian wing. Nefertiti finally gave me what I've been wondering about for all those years - a realistic interpretation of what life was like during the reign of the pharaohs.
This book consumed my attention for a good week, drawing me completely into the complex web of relationships at its core and drawing interesting and believable rationales for what made certain characters tick. The breadth of the novel was ambitious, but it was nonetheless executed marvelous well. It is deep and dark at many points, and may be disturbing or triggering for some, most of them stemming from the disasters often wreaked on personal relationships thanks to the obsessive creative urge, but I think it handled all of the issues it tackled believably and with remarkable tact. My only real criticism of this book would be the distracting, didactic and overlong "historical interludes" where the author spent five or six pages diverging from the narrative to catch the reader up, in detail, with the historical events of the day. While I do think that the way this novel was very consciously embedded in a historical moment was compelling, the same effect could have been achieved much more succinctly than it was.

The problem with the star scale that Goodreads employs is this: just because I found a book to be very well written, very important, or very engaging does not automatically indicate that I "liked", "really liked" or "loved" the book. Such is the case with Columbine. Journalist Dave Cullen's in-depth examination of the school shooting in Littleton in 1999 is all of these things - the writing is gripping, moving, and evocative, his research is extensive, and the book provides many possible answers (as well as invoking many questions) to those interested in understanding what happened, why, and what it meant or means. These things make Columbine a book that should be read and shared and discussed, but do not make it a reading experience that one can enjoy, I don't believe. Cullen's tale is heartwrenching, disturbing, maddening, scientific, exacting, depressing, and hopeful; it is not fun.

Audio. Ryan and I both listened to this. He gives it 5 stars, I give it 4. Kind of a sad story, but with lots of triumph over struggles and kids setting the parents straight. I really liked the main character, Paul Fisher. He is a soccer player, which is part of the reason Ryan liked it so much.

After reading the reviews maybe I shouldn't write one. I loved the children's story -12 Dancing Princesess and was so excited to read this twist on it. However, after suffering through 3 chapters I gave up. I am not usually so picky, so what am I missing that everyone else sees? I did not like the author's writing style, the dialogue was lame, and the story was not in the least bit captivitating. Here is sits by my only skimmed through and I am really so sad about it!

Not my typical genre... we'll see how it goes. Doing it on audio book format in the car. My audio book ended in the middle of chapter 12! Am getting the print version via interlibrary loan, so this is currently on hold. I was really into it when ... Poof... it was gone! Finally got hold of a print copy yesterday and finished. I liked it! I don't know if I'll read others similar, but maybe.

I was hoping this would be pure historical fiction, WWII, about an interesting morale building program I hadn't known about: schools adopting ships and making pen pals of the sailors, for the war effort. Then there was a whole connect to the present, family secrets, flashback plot.. wasn't too fond of that.
I was ready to read an indulgent book and I got one. Juliet is an unlikely adventure to Siena, Italy where the main character learns the story that inspired Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The story line (not revealing here so as not to spoil your fun), if you really think about it, is a bit silly but because it was cleverly crafted and grounded in historical fact with no loose ends it worked. Plus, I was ready for silly too. The Author, in the Author's Notes explains the parts of the story that were based on real events/historical likelihoods and where should took creative license which is nice. If you're looking for a break from really heavy topics but don't want to dive deep into the chick lit genre to do, this is a good read.
