This story hit closr to home as I grew up a couple of towns over. Easy to follow for a nonfiction. Really gets your outrage meter on overdrive.

Beautiful and sad. It's understandable that this won the Nobel prize for literature.

I thought this was... odd. At first I found it amusing to see all the glaring errors in the "memoir". When it shifted into a more recent "diary" of things, it took a few pages for my mind to make the shift as well; the transition could have been smoother, I think. I did like how, in the end, the reader gets the whole explanation for the memoir in the first place. Definitely an interesting debut; I'm curious to see what this author will come up with next.
This book has changed my life and continues to make me a better man

When Lena meets Alex he shows her a world that she discovers may not be as wrong as she was raised to believe and that perhaps her mother might have been onto something when she wouldn't let love go for anything, not even her life. Their relationship is full of emotion and is definitely a ride worth going through. I wanted so bad for them to be together and make it in the end, but of course, there was the ever ominous cliffhanger ending, so I am hoping for the best in the next book. Alex is wonderful. He is full of secrets, kindness, warmth, and above all: the forbidden emotion, love. Alex, along with her best friend Hana, show Lena what a different world it could really be without being trapped within the borders of the controlling world they live in. I highly recommend this to fans of dystopian, I don't think you will be disappointed. It is deep, moving, and at some points will have you on the edge of your seat and biting your nails.

LOVED it! Percy's story takes on a darker tone in the fourth book of the series, as he, Annabeth, Grover and Tyson try to find their way through the great Labryinth of Dedaelus. As I said earlier, as the series progresses, the better it gets! Though in some ways this book acts more as a stepping stone for the final conflict in book five, the characters mature and are faced with more complex situations. I loved the scene with Percy and the river nymph, because it shows the kind of person, and hero, Percy is without a whole lot of sword-fighting (though there is plenty of that, too!). Percy's relationship with Rachel blooms, and he learns a lot about romance from an impromptu sojourn with Calypso (whom I LOVED), and is faced with the choice of putting the world before himself. Annabeth's journey, too, is a very interesting one, as she takes on her biggest challenge yet, and learns that even idols can make mistakes. Overall a great book, and ties in excellently with the final in this series.

This book tends to get slammed. I actually didn't mind it that much, fluff thought it may be. What really got to me what the unnamed first person narrator. It bugged the heck out of me.

I know lots of people like Barbara and this book, but I thought it was just OK. Good perspective on missionary work in Africa though.
After the release of her best-selling Nickel and Dimed, an undercover journey to document the struggles of blue-collar employment, Barbara Ehrenreich was constantly approached with the question: what about the fall of the middle class? What about the laid-off executive who can no longer support a family, or the engineering graduate behind the counter at Starbucks? These were the motivated workers who supposedly did everything right and are now sinking toward the poverty line. In Bait and Switch, Ehrenreich continues to dispel the old-fashioned myth that in America, we can accomplish anything with hard work. Does she provide a solution? No. That's because there really is no solution. No economic system is perfect, and the current employment trends are some of the downfalls of capitalism, a system that America embraces but simultaneously condemns. Now, her experiment wasn't perfect. Creating a fake identity complete with her former name, an imagined past as a PR professional re-entering the industry, and a phony resume, Ehrenreich was only able to present a one-dimensional account of her own experience rather than get into the bigger picture. Would a real PR professional with an identical background have been to secure a position within that four month period? Who knows. Probably not. What Bait and Switch revealed to me, more than anything else, is the phoniness that exists within--I'll even broaden it from "corporate world" to the phoniness within the business world. It's an element that was present in all stages of her job search. The career coach she found online was a living farce. Networking events she attended ended up being masked religious movements (this was incredibly interesting-I'd recommend reading the book for this account alone). The book examines not just the cheesy, but the downright bizarre philosophical and psychological movements within the business world. The writing is funny and charming, making it an enjoyable read. But despite the entertaining style, the subject matter is dark and disturbing. Part of this is due to the manipulation that Ehrenreich encounters, and part is due to the people she interacts with who are falling apart.
