I gobbled this book up. This is a beautifully written memoir about love, heartache, pain and suffering and the beauty of friendship to withstand it all.

I remember liking this book, but I don't remember if the language was bad. I am thinking it might have been. . . ?

** spoiler alert ** This book picks up where the other one left off, with Kitty and her pack being threatened by the Band of Tiamat and trying to stop them. I thought it was stronger than the last one although partly because focus wasn't as much on her relationship with Ben in this book. (It was obviously an appropriate focus last time since the book contained her wedding). Intellectually I think they're good for each other, but I think she had much better chemistry with Cormac. Normally I prefer the intellectual types, but Ben feels a little bland and doesn't seem very proactive. It feels like he was tagging along after Cormac and now he's tagging along after Kitty. On a more positive note I liked the new characters and I liked that Kitty continues to believe that just because one incredible thing is true doesn't mean that all incredible things are true, in fact, it's even more reason to be skeptical. I also like the idea of Kitty using her show as a resource. The explanation for how/why TJ became a werewolf is a nice reveal and provides a good back story. I'll be interested to see how the partnership with Rick progresses and I like that it's an element of the story but it's not the focus of the series. Kitty's conflict about wanting to reason with something that can't be reasoned with was also a nice touch. I like it when the bad guys have a little shade of gray to them. I'm glad things wrapped up with the Band of Tiamat, I think the power behind them is a much more interesting big bad. I'm a little concerned about the premise of the next book, but it will be nice to see some characters from other books returning.

Demos left me with a new perspective on the witchcraft crisis. I'm not sure that his use of Freudian analysis is valid, however his exploration on the role of pyschology was very interesting.

A Modish Synopsis, A Modest Assemblage, A Little Looksee It's a whole long story, and it's open to interpretation. Each chapter begins with a pronoun, or two. And then it's off like a robber's dog. I decided you and I might hit the matrix for a little looksee. You followed, forgetting your fears, forgetting the nausea and constant vertigo. You were there, and you understood this was our space, our construct. It came on, a flickering, non-linear flood of fact and sensory data, a kind of narrative conveyed in surreal jumpcuts and juxtapositions. Machine dreams. Rollercoaster. It was fast, too fast, too alien to grasp. You could hallucinate in the matrix as easily as anywhere else. You looked at me through the thicket of manipulators. I came simultaneously to see that I was the focus of some vast device fuelled by an obscure desire. I kissed your mouth as it opened, cut loose in time by talk and the fireflies and the subliminal triggers of memory. It seemed to me, as I ran my palms up the warmth of your white t-shirt, that the people in my life weren't beads strung on a wire of sequence, but clustered like quanta. Eventually, I came to feel that this was a situation in which real becomes merely another concept. It doesn't tell the whole story. Remember that. Nothing ever does... SOUNDTRACK: (view spoiler)

I know I read this book and I know I liked it, because I had previously sworn off all things Thomas Hardy after reading Return of the Native, which I hated with the fire of a thousand burning suns. But then I read Tess and I liked it. Problem is I don't remember what it's about. I want to say her dad pimps her out to her rich relatives? And she falls in love with some dude but drama happens? I don't remember. I probably should read it again but it kept me and Thomas Hardy on such great terms I wouldn't dare do anything to try and shake that up. What if I end up hating it the second time? Not a chance I'm willing to take.

I can only comment on this book through the lens of havign taught it to kids. Those who want a fast storyline are not going to find it here. Those who are interested in the different ways that cultures do things like marriage, widowhood and death will find a well written story with compelling characters and ultimately an excellent plot. Koly is a child bride who only was married off for the money of her bride price, as it turns out. And her future husband is on his deathbed. With so many things constantly changing in her life, it's amazing that Koly can manage to maintain her positive attitude about life.

it was ok
Having read this after reading "A Thousand Sons" and "Prospero Burns," it just didn't seem to fit in quite right. That being said, the personality conflicts between the assassins are intriguing and the circuitous plot kept me turning the pages. Unfortunately, very few of the characters even have any real room to develop. A fun action read all the same.
