Another big favorite from my childhood. Posy wants to be a ballet dancer, but she and her two sisters, also orphans, must help out to earn a living and keep the family going. They live in England post WWI (I think). Pauline becomes an actress and Petrova (they all have the last name because their adopted father is a fossil hunter) dances in patomines. Meanwhile Posy is the baby of the family and a frustrated genius. It is a sweet tale, one of many "Shoes" books by Stretfield.

I have read all of the Raleigh Harmon novels and in my opinion they just get better and better. This fourth one in the series was so good I didn’t want it to end, but although it is the longest book so far, I knew that Raleigh had to eventually solve the case and get off that cruise ship. Raleigh and her mother are along for the ride on a cruise with her Aunt Charlotte and Charlotte’s crazy psychic friend, who just happens to grate on Raleigh’s last nerve every time she’s in the room. Raleigh has taken a job as a consultant for a Hollywood movie, and plans to do some rock hunting and hiking on her “sort of vacation.” But as you’d expect, someone ends up dying and Raleigh is pulled into solving the murder before the cruise ends and all the suspects get away. Raleigh is newly engaged, but still unsure of her feelings for the southern gentleman back home, even ignoring his calls and using work as a buffer against dealing with the truth. Her mother is mentally fragile and with all that is going on, Raleigh is not able to keep an eye on her like she normally would, shielding her with lies and evasion to the point that she doesn’t like herself very much. Jack, an FBI agent from her past, flies in to help her with the case, further confusing her feelings about marriage to her fiancé, DeMott. The Mountains Bow Down is a murder mystery on a cruise ship with self-obsessed Hollywood characters, laugh-out-loud humor, and beautiful descriptions of Alaska and the ocean that will make you want to take your own cruise there, but it also has an emotional depth that sneaks up and pulls at you like a riptide. The character development is awesome to behold, facets of Raleigh’s character revealed in the smallest of nuance. Whether tender scenes with her mother, or repartee with Jack–the agent she wants to dislike, we learn a little more about Raleigh and what makes her tick. (Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

The setting is South Africa civil war and the aparthied. The debate is racism and prejudice. But at its core this book tackles how we are all human and are emotionally pained by the cruel life events that plague those in such a volatile setting.

This is My first time to read a John Green book, and probably not the last. Sakit sa panga. ROFLOL.
I'd give it 2 stars if not for the funny moments that Gilbert managed to slip in between harrowing accounts of her depression and rather boastful reports of her older boyfriend's sexual prowess. Do we really need to know how she got that bladder infection? Yikes. The writing is fluid and the book was a fast read. Some of the insights that she learned during her time in the ashram are quite interesting, although she did not break any new grounds with them. I wonder why she needed to travel to India to stay in that ashram while the same experience (so she told us) was available in California under the guidance of the same guru. Some of the characters that she met were rather too cutesy to be wholly believable, like Richard from Texas, who nicknamed her 'groceries' and acted as her personal guardian angel in that ashram. If you are interested in books about westerners travelling in Asia in search of spirituality, you'll be better off with Tiziano Terzani's A Fortune Teller Told Me. A word or two about 'running amok'. Gilbert told us that the word 'amok' came from the Balinese language and that it specifically refers to a 'battle technique of suddenly going insanely wild against one's enemies in suicidal and bloody hand-to-hand combat'. In fact, the word 'amok' came from the Malay language (nowadays more commonly spelled 'amuk' in Bahasa Indonesia), although the Javanese and Balinese languages also have their own version of the word. It does not refer to a specific battle technique; 'amok' simply means being violently angry. Maybe Gilbert was thinking of another word, 'puputan', which is a Balinese word which means 'fighting to the death'.
I really liked this book. Remember When is like McNaught's novel Paradise without nearly as much bite - swap out Matt Farrell for Cole Harrison as the tough, cold, formerly poor business tycoon and Meredith Benedict for Diana Foster as the sweet, warm, debutante turned CEO. And I'm good with that. It's got the same theme of a one-year marriage of convenience (although this one is MUCH more delightful to see how it's "sold"), but in this one, the couple does not lose faith in one another. The obstacles they come across they face together, and it makes for a shorter, but sweeter story.
This book is a collection of stories from the NPR National Story Project from a few years back. There are lots of great short stories in here. I found it best to read in small chunks. There are so many different types of stories and writing styles to work through--sometimes I needed a break. Highly recommended!

One of my favorite books, but then I love historical fiction. Its also written in diary form which makes it a quick read.
