The Doll: Short Stories. by Daphne Du Maurier… Daphne Du Maurier is known as a writer who can create suspenseful atmosphere and twisted characters. This book of short stories from her youth does not disappoint on either count. Yes, a few of the stories are unpolished or overblown ( A Difference in Temperament,The Doll), but there are also some real treasures here. 'And Now to God the Father' and 'Picadilly' are brilliant studies of depressing characters. 'The Limpet' is an astonishing tale of a woman (reminiscent of Elizabeth Taylor's Angel), insinuating herself and meddling to disastrous effect with the lives of everyone in her path. Thankfully, there is sly comic relief to be found in a few of these tales as a contrast to the cynical, oppressive mood of the majority. Recommended for Du Maurier fans and those who love an unexpected twist in their short stories.

Okay, I finished this Ryan. And it's not terrible. But I didn't find the argument original, so I was expecting the direction the novel was going. But not a bad book.

I first noticed this book on the Kindle homepage as a recommended read for me. I was immediately drawn to the cover, recognizing the cross-stitch design as something by the Subversive Cross-Stitch woman. Then I started reading Dooce's blog and eventually purchased the book. The book was solid and funny and heart-warming, and it's played a role in mentally preparing me (well, as much as you can be, anyway) to start a family. Heather speaks honestly and openly about the truths of pregnancy, family life, and her mental breakdown. I admire that and am thankful for it.

I learned this man wants you to like the music that has made him the person he is. Some of the sentiments were great. He started the book pushing pop and it not always being inane but it ended up with him pushing "under the radar" performers.

So, I've read all the books in this series and some are a little weird. This one isn't but it's pretty much the same story. Considering Eve Duncan gets sucked into these adventures through a sense of responsibility... that's always a little far fetched. Makes friends too fast...goes places she shouldn't be going...pulls her Joe guy with her because he always feels responsible for her... The worst line in the book -and totally out of character for bleeding heart Eve Duncan- is when she tells a 14 year old girl (Kelly, one of the characters in the book) that she would break all her bones if she messed up the current forensic reconstruction Eve is working on... well actually Kelly is working on, because she has this master brain for "patterns" and puzzles and figures out the reconstruction in record time... so Eve's reaction is even more rediculous. WTF (and I don't swear)? It's an OK read though otherwise and tries on the big 9/11 theme and the main characters trying to save the world... will they succeed? See for yourself... Despite everything I wrote above I think this is the biggest and best of this series. So read it!
