Looked through for images of Victorian New York.

This was a quick, excellent read. It's not too explicit, but I think it's a little mature for my students. I still might quietly hand it to a few of my students...

I ordered this book from the library after seeing the theatrical trailer for the upcoming movie. It's apparently a joint effort by Jobie Hughes and James Frey. It's ok, especially the first third, and some of it is even clever. The ending is disappointing, but so are most books where the sequel is already in the works. The library classifies it as a "Teen novel." It's a teen-coming-of-age movie with sci-fi potential-end-of-earth and cute-animal-comedic- relief elements. It's nice that the girl teens are smart and independent, but my biggest gripe is that it says that "true love" is for teens. Here, I've given it a "4," but given the comments I'm writing, it sounds more like a 3! The final comment is I don't think I'll go see the movie. I'll wait until I can get it from the library, so that I won't feel bad if I have to get up and walk out on it!

Angela Davis is pretty awesome. I didn’t really know what to expect going into it, and it’s basically a historical examination of the intersection of struggles against sexism, racism, and classism. Or, more accurately, against slavery and lynching, against capitalism, and for woman suffrage and reproductive freedom. I think it’s interesting how Davis, at this point in time at least, certainly saw socialism (rooted in anti-racism and anti-sexism) as the answer to capitalist oppression. I really liked how she kept all three together in focus throughout the book and could critically engage the work of activists for one cause in light of the others – like how Frederick Douglass’s campaigning against slavery included a keen analysis of the unique situation of black women, but Susan B Anthony’s campaigning for woman suffrage violently ignored all non-white middle class women, despite her personal relationships with Douglass and Ida B Wells.
It was ok but I didn't like it nearly as much as Salt or Cod. I was hoping for it to be like Gangs of New York as told through the eyes of oysters. I enjoyed the beginning sections on old Dutch New York but then it seemed to get really repetitious in the 17 and 18th centuries. I felt like I was reading the same chapter over and over. The all of the sudden in the last chapter everything was polluted and it was over.
I can't believe how Gerritsen can keep coming up with new ideas. Again, this one has a different feel than the others. There is less forensics, more mystery.
I think that Edward is a jerk who acts like he is Bella's father/jailer. Also, I found the no-sex-before-marriage message to be a bit heavy-handed.

** spoiler alert ** from characters inDana Stabenow book... a history comparing the 14th century to now wow... anything you wanted (or even didn't want to know) about 14th century europe, especially england and france... religion, classes, food, health, the plague, war, politics, etc. difficult to listen to as there are so many names, it became difficult to tract, but a wealth of information.
i enjoyed this book but it didn't leave me really excited to recommend it or anything. perhaps it is because i just read "to kill a mockingbird," and they have some similar themes but mockingbird handles them so much better. well written though, and i enjoyed the story in general.
This was assigned for Introduction to Theatre at Grinnell College. Only Miller's Crucible had been assigned in high school. Dark and depressing when read as a teenager, I shudder to think how it would read were the primary identification with Willy Loman. As it was I thought of Dad, who had once been on the Honeywell salesforce, and of the fathers of friends when reading this.
