The six characters of the Book Club are like the characters in Jane Austen's books, and their life stories mirror some of the issues of each book but in a modern way. The point of view is manipulated very cleverly. It's almost as if the author (and by default you the reader) is a seventh member of the book club. Love, love, loved it! And the movie was very good, too.

Good early book (ages 1 and up). No words, it's all pictures. It's nice to make up the story as you page along with your child. If you are looking for something like this for older children (5-8), try David Weisner's books - I like Flotsam and Sector 7 the best. Likewise, Museum Trip, Trainstop and Rainstorm by Barbara Lehman are awesome no-word books, too. Really good stuff.
Ishiguro is my favorite novelist, despite the fact that I have to endure long, dry spells between his books. Nevertheless, this one is hard for me to embrace, and I have both read it in print and am in the process of listening to it on CD.
Loved this book, and I still can't believe it's a true story. I had a love/hate relationship with her parents, where I could see moments when you could really see that they loved their family, and then I had moments where I hated them deeply. Great book.

This was one of those books that wasn't exactly a page turner, but it was always interesting. I'd put it down for days, then pick it up and be intrigued by the story all over again. The subject matter was pretty depressing...the optimist in me kept saying, "This all happened over thirty years ago. Things are different now." Still, it's depressing to know that police departments have ever been so corrupt, whether they are now or not.
Hard to finish this book, yet when I finished the series...it all fit!
yet another by my mother. she is pretty great!

What? I says. Apologize, he says. Fer bein so damn ungrateful. I narrow my eyes. I don't learn manners from a thief, I says. Cuz that's what you are, ain't it Jack? That's what you do to git by. I might be a thief, he says, I might not be. One thing's fer certain though. I ain't the one they call the Angel of Death. He knows jest where to stab me. You know a book is good when the entire thing is written in a hybrid slang, has no quotation marks, and the copy you happen to own is missing half of the l's (this was a galley/proof error not related to the writing style of the first two things mentioned), yet you still find yourself not noticing after a while because the story draws you in. Granted, it did take a while to warm up to the author's way of writing, but I felt the style lent a more realistic feeling to the post-apocalyptic vibe. Not only was the story compelling, nervewracking, heart-wrenching, and crazy, but the characters also stole my heart. The last 100 pages had me transfixed. Sign me up for the Nero fanclub. I want a crow like him now.
