Pearl S. Buck was the daughter of a Southern Presbyterian missionary. Though she was born in the United States, she grew up in China. Fighting Angel is her biography and memoir of her father Absalom Sydenstricker (or Andrew as he's called in the book). The book is written with Buck's usual straightforward approach of weaving simple words together into fully realized worlds. Her memoir though is written without warmth. Though she refers to herself sometimes in the first person, she calls her parents by their first names (Carie and Andrew). I don't know if these names were their actual nicknames or if she altered them slightly on purpose. She also sometimes refers to herself as Comfort (her middle name) making it seem as if she is speaking of a different person. The portrait she paints of her father isn't complimentary. She focuses on his religious zeal for saving souls but repeated notes that he only believed a certain subset of humankind had souls worth saving (namely men of certain means). She goes on to describe how her father hated women, hated the rich, hated fat people, hated most of his family and so forth. Yet somehow she seems to expect her readers to respect this man that was her father! While I enjoyed her style of writing I came away not feeling I knew her any better and knowing that if I had met her father I'd have to restrain myself from punching him in the nose. I am glad I read the book but it isn't a book I would want to reread.

I thought this was a great story.
Come on...these books really are full of rubbish. I love the TV series but the most you will get out of reading the series is many descriptions of what the characters are wearing (e.g. a blood orange Marc Jacobs hobo-tote) and all the characters sleeping with each other. And in the final book there isn't even a resolution. Nope, it's like the author couldn't think of a way to end it so she just made Nate run off somewhere instead of making him choose between Serena or Blair. And the characters are completely hollow. Watch the TV series. Don't waste you time reading this book.

I was given this book by a friend of the author. I really did not think I was going to like it, especially after seeing the name U2 in the content ( I find Bono such a wanker), but I ended up being really impressed by this novel. I will definately be picking up another one of his titles. I hear African Ice is really good.

Honestly, I probably would have rated this higher if it hadn't of scared the piss out of me. I didn't even finish it.

This is a good novel for a teen/tween who is having trouble communicating with their parents. It follows a high school girl and her friend through their daily activities and crushes and gets you involved with the characters, and you learn that one girl's father is still mourning the loss of his wife while ignoring the girl and the other girl's mother is a recently divorced "man-hater". The book deals with their problems and how they unsuccessfully try to solve them before they eventually open up and learn that communicating directly is best for everyone.
Not sure yet
Not sure why, but I couldn't keep my mind off this story.

Gossamer is a delightful book, perhaps my new favorite young-adult book. I picked it up at Barnes and Noble when I was looking for Number the Stars which wasn't there. I read 3/4 of Gossamer in the store while waiting for my eye doctor appointment. Absolutely lovely.

The story explores the importance of family and the interesting and important ways that lives intertwine and actions ripple outward to affect others. Interesting and entertaining. The multiple author approach created some interesting twists and turns but also some frustrating dead ends. Favorite chapters: * Maggie (L.S. Park) * Annie (D. Almond) * Jason (E. Colfer) * Lev (D. Ellis) * Min (T. Wynne Jones) * Jiro (R. Ozeki) This book would be great book for creative writing.
