A pretty in-depth look at the government's reaction on September 11, the history of Al Qaeda, and the Bush/Cheney administration. I'm sure the author put a positive spin on his own involvement as the counter-terrorism chief, but the book helped me to better understand the United States' ongoing conflict with terrorism.

Found it hard to keep my patience while trying to figure out just what the plot was. It’s a novel about twins (funny, I just read The Thirteenth Tale, also a story about twins). And while it has some unique language usage, indeed some lovely poetic passages, the fact that it takes place in India makes it hard enough to follow. Unless you are fairly well-versed in Indian geography, politics, social structure, it’s challenging. Plus, it isn’t until you’re almost 100 pages into the story that you start finding out what the story IS, and even then it takes many more pages to develop the actual plot. This novel has rave reviews, but unless you are a determined reader, you may find it frustrating to get through. Sometimes you just want stories to be more, well, linear.

A very spotty book. I've always liked Ken Follett's work. His "Pillars of the Earth" is one of my top 5% books. Even "Night Over Water," which I didn't really like, was a well-told story. "Fall of Giants," however, is not his usual quality. It bounces back and forth between his usual brilliant story telling, cheap romance novel writing, and high school term paper exposition. I thought about paying the $18.99 that Penguin was asking for the Kindle edition--shame on you Penguin--but got it at the library instead. I'm glad I did. I skimmed close to half.
