A surprisingly fast read, very talky as is the case with many older Russian writers--they don't do much internal work as modern characters, thought all comes out as talk. But wow, Pasternak is so in tune with nature and it's feeling and effects--never thought of him as a nature writer--he's sort of like Kerouac in that way, oddly enough. But many of his plot devices are a little heavy handed, and one doesn't enter into the characters as one does with the greats. It's flawed but absolutely worth reading.

The summary on the book flap sounded so interesting, but I was disappointed with the style of writing as well as the story itself. It was supposed to be about the Salem Witch Trials, but the main focus was on incidents that happened in adjoining villages and townships.

The first book takes place in a cave. The second is about the hero struggling to discover the truth, freed from the cave and out in the naked sun. I am not sure if it was intentional or not, but the allusion to Plato's Republic is interesting. I am not sure how deep it goes, but it is there, especially with the discussion of Sparta as a kind of model for Solaria. Asimov weaves a great mystery story and I can't wait to get to the Robots of Dawn.

Insufferably clunky prose. Just like all her books.

One of the most enjoyable and engaging novels I've read in the past year. Melds the synchronistic and enchanted weaving together of characters' lives and fates of a Dickens or Bronte novel with the wit and humor of Oscar Wilde at his best, with a contemporary overall sensibility. Rose Old is the most charming and endearing embodiment of a fictional gender outlaw I have yet come across. Highly recommended to anyone interested in gender identity who likes a good long rollicking novel.
First this book is about the relationships between the Afrian American maid/nanny and the southern women of the elite households in whivh the work. Kathryn Socketts's characters are mesmorizing. Their personalities are intriguing. The individuals have diverse exclusive lives that connect into relationships of friendship, work and hatred are real. This book is a bit longer than what I usually read but I couldn't put it down. Each chapter finished with a cliffhanger which made me want to read another. I can't wait till she finishes another novel.
Library discard. Wonderful! Old maid school teacher, highly esteemed.

Ellis is an outstanding writer who successfully examines the friendships and rivalries of the men of the Revolution. He strips the book of historical context and examines the pith of several feuds, most interestingly setting up the book with the famous Hamilton-Burr duel. Each chapter (and the prologue) is worth reading on its own, though as a whole it is a journey through the American spirit. Extra points for its short length and accessibility.
