South-East Asia has changed so much over the past few centuries that a brief history of the region and the people who inhabit it are essential to make sense of it all. As the history of the region is inextricably linked to the Mekong, this book is perfect; it uncovers interesting snippets that are not gleaned from travelling through the region and that you’re unlikely to find in travel guides. Never has the word awesome been more apt than when describing the mighty Mekong. If this book doesn't leave you burgeoning with wanderlust, best lock your doors and windows; you're suffering from acute agoraphobia. A slight exaggeration, but nevertheless essential reading for anyone embarking on a trip to South-East Asia.

This was a good mystery featuring bookstore owner Annie Laurence and her fiance Max Darling. There were lots of suspects and clues which Annie and Max had to sift through to find the killer. I liked the references to other mystery authors and stories sprinkled throughout the book.

Review: 1984 is a book that made me think quite a bit about the theories that "The Party" posses. We see the last few months perhaps of Winston's life before the Thought Police capture him and completely alter his mind. The book leaves us hanging by not truly answering the question of Goldstein's existence. I enjoy books that make me think but on the other hand, I do not enjoy depressing books. Once Winston got captured, I hoped that he would hold out against the torture or that Goldstein would have finally convinced the proles that their lives should be better than this. Sadly, neither of those 2 things happened. Overall, this is a very interesting book about an anti-utopian society that controls absolutely everything. I believe that if one of the 2 things that I mentioned in paragraph 2 would have happened, then the book would have not been depressing and I would have enjoyed it quite a bit more.

Suffers from that curiously and unfortunately endemic trait of pop-sci writing, the tiresome 'scientists in the field' vignette; lots and lots of these that, per usual, add little to the readers comprehension and take the reader away from what they're here for: in this case, the cephalopods! Three stars because, come on guys, friggin' awesome squids, right?

I liked the writing, especially the picture she painted about London in the 1750s. It could have been a little shorter.... Not sure who I'd recommend this book too. I love ROOM and will try another of her books.
