Yep, this is the same Zinnia who was photographed coming out of the bedroom of a very influential businessman who also happened to be very much married - you’ll need to read the book to find out what that was all about! Now she’s on the front page again – after Nick convinced her he didn’t kidnap her client, she hied herself off to Morris’ bookshop, and discovered his body. Nick followed her to try to keep her out of trouble, but the combination of a murdered body, the owner of Chastain’s Casino, and The Scarlet Lady (aka Zinnia) was too much for the tabloids to ignore. And it seems that everywhere she turns, that tabloid photographer is there to put the worst spin on her activities, which doesn’t make her relatives happy – they’ve lost their place in society and are looking for Zinnia to make an advantageous marriage to put them back where they think they deserve to be (except for her brother Leo – he’s on her side). And then there’s Nick’s relatives, who love to keep reminding him that he’s a bastard in more than one way. If that’s not enough, they’ve got some mysterious deaths to figure out, and the mystery of the lost Third Chastain Expedition, and the difficulties of finding a marriage match for two decidedly unmatchable people - well, guess how that will turn out!

Aaaaand, we’re back. Everything that I felt was lacking in the second book (eg, my interest) was revived completely in this book. Daine is back in the land of the two-leggers and is facing the oft named but never before seen Emperor Mage Ozorne. And it turns out that Ozorne really shouldn’t have messed with our Daine. There’s a whole chapter called “Daine loses her temper” which I’m still grinning about. Daine may seem cute with her crunchy granola, tree-hugging, “save the whales” exterior but if you mess with her friends, she will bring. a world. of pain. Daine, Numair, Alanna, and a whole crew of Tortallans are sent to Carthak in an attempt at diplomacy and peace, after the Carthaki Emperor has allegedly opened the walls between the immortal and mortal realms. Daine is there in a very minor capacity, to heal the Emperor’s prized pet birds. Carthak is a very different place than Tortall: human slavery, censorship, and violence are a way of life there. The Emperor initially seems kind, even playful, but he has a hidden agenda. Along the way, we get to learn more about Numair’s past and meet a few of his old “friends.” If there’s one thing I’m sure about after reading this book, it’s this: Tamora Pierce has spent a significant amount of time in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. For anyone who’s ever visited the dinosaur exhibit, Daine’s new power will have a vividly frightening dimension. It’s just plain kismet that I happened to visit that very place only a weekend before starting this book. *shudders* There is only very minor development on the romance front, which I am extremely happy about in one sense. Why does Daine need a love interest at all? She’s wonderful all on her own. Yay for strong, independent ladies!! … On the other hand…Numair. Enough said. Daine actually has a bit of a “rival” in this book, when Numair runs into an old flame who’s obviously still interested. And by “rival” I mean someone that Daine barely notices is there and then treats with kindness and respect later on. I’m pretty sure that I was about one hundred times more peeved about the whole thing than Daine was. I fail. And now I must cut this short, as I just happened to read this tantalizing passage this morning: “Suddenly he [Numair] learned something that he’d never considered before. For a brief moment, that fresh knowledge erased even his sense of magical cataclysm.” And if I don’t find out what that’s all about, my head might explode. Perfect Musical Pairing The Cranberries – Liar This kick-ass song is my little tribute to Emperor Ozorne. There's nothing quite like the stench of fear in the afternoon...

هذه الرواية بـ رغم شهرة كونديرا ، ومقدرته الكتابية الباهرة لكني لم أحتمل طقوسها ، والتكرار الذي بدا مقيتًا ، والحديث عن الجنس بـ شكلٍ خاص ومركز عليه وكـ أن لا شيء أهم ، حتى أنه لا يعاب تمامًا أن يتحدث عن هذا ، لكن بات مملًا ، ومكررًا ، وليس من جديد لم تعجبني ، وإن كنت سأقرأ لكونديرا عملًا آخر

Not a great read. I was doing well with it until the main character actually cheated on her husband, discovered she was pregnant and decided to stay with her husband. Puh-leeze. If I wanted a trash about cheating spouses, I'd watch Days of Our Lives.

Plots, upon plots, upon plots...and always the historical "what if". Robert Harris paints an imaginative picture, cleverly using actual historical detail to flesh it out. My one objection to books that have Stalin in them is: wasn't he diabolical enough without having to make him even worse? A chilling thought. But a capturing book, all in all.

This is one of my absolute favorite books from childhood. Probably hard to find, but if you ever come across it - read it. It will take you about 3 hours. Those of you who know and love me will understand me just a little bit more after having experienced this book. :) It is hysterically funny and incredibly impressive, having been completely written by an 8th grade boy!

I read this ARC on the plane ride home from the New York SCBWI conference, and I finished it in that one sitting--pacy, intriguing, and so much tension I think I was holding my breath the last forty-five minutes of the flight. A good read, and I can't wait to see what Anne does with the sequel.
