Another great Van Vogt with some surprising angles; suppose you suddenly find yourself in some other body ...

Treacherous Tango by E. Ryan Hale starts off in the courtroom at a trial where you meet some of the key players, including Aidan Wolf and Jenna Jacobs. You’ll want to pay attention to the trial and everyone involved because nothing is frivolous in this fast moving thriller. Hale weaves a story that is indeed a tango with intricate moves and enough twirls to keep you guessing as to the killer. This tango is a fast-paced dance. Hale keeps this story moving by bringing in a compelling second thread. Emilio and Ana Ortiz and their children, including their newborn Jenna. Their lives and the family are being torn apart by a system that seems to work on stereotypes instead of finding out the truth. But it is the strange and ominous threats that have everyone on edge. They start off as warnings, then get darker and more direct. Then they become dangerous and personal. And the heroes are not necessarily who you would have expected. Hale is good at keeping the characters true to their personalities and not letting them off easy. At times I wanted to whack a character upside the head, but he was being himself rather than omniscient, like the reader. There are books where you can feel the author pushing a character to change or see the light, but E. Ryan Hale lets her characters show their true selves.

I recommend this book to anyone who desires to participate in (or even just intelligently follow along with) the dialogue between Christians and Atheists. I found it to be a page-turner. It was short, but thorough enough to cover or at least reference the relevant points of view and arguments for and against them. Lennox doesn't simply present his pet theory, but addresses the issue as a whole, giving context, and carefully dissecting arguments and positions where he thinks relevant. He is scathing, but humble. Lennox does preach, but he is not preachy.

I love it. It is an awesome book. lots of predicting
Besides that the sample "conversations" between parent and child were laughably unrealistic, I found it helpful. The premise is that you will get the best results from your kids if you empathize with them, not tell them not to whine, not tell them it's no big deal, not ask them questions you already know the answers to, etc. The empathizing doesn't mean you give them what they want, only that you acknowledge their feelings. Children want to feel understood. We'll see how well it works when my child actually starts talking. Also, Jared accused me of using this strategy on him the other night. HA!

This was my introduction to Marquez, read it when I was about 16 or 17. I bought this as a First Edition Hardback simply based on my English teacher dropping the name of the author in our class once. But I have never been happier with a purchase. Not his greatest work, but one of beauty and tragedy nonetheless. I love the descriptions of the decadence of Colonial South America, and the inner purity of the two lead characters juxtaposed against their physical failings and the horror of the convent. Nothing tops Marquez for me.

Gotham City from the ground up; catch a few days from the viewpoint of the GCPD, and see what it's like trying to do your job in the shadow of the bat. Great character work, very noir-ish art style, and some really hard plot development to deal with.
